This sixth IMKB volume attempts to synthesize research done over a longer period of time in a reference book format. The work presents in survey articles the efforts to study foundations and applications of conceptual modelling in various environments. The motivation of these efforts is the fact that conceptual modelling and knowledge representation together with various kinds of inference systems are important subfields in the design and use of information systems. The modelling problem is essential in many disciplines, such as database design, knowledge engineering, logic, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, philosophy, linguistics, etc. A central and comprehensive bibliography is included.

Population Forecasting 1895–1945

Authors, scholars and scientists whose mother tongue is not one of the major languages of international communication are seriously disadvantaged. Some individuals, such as Joseph Conrad or Vladimir Nabokov, have overcome that handicap brilliantly. Others learn to live with it: they can express themselves sufficiently lucidly in a second language to make their voice heard internation ally. At least when they have something original or striking to say they will be certain to reach their peers. Most scientists and scholars fall into that category. Others, again, have to wait until their work has been translated before its value is recognised. This may apply even to those whose mother tongue is...

Advanced Information Systems Engineering

The Nordic Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE) is an annual international conference for users, developers and researchers of information systems technology and methodology. A distinctive characteristic of the CAiSE conference series is the objective to appeal to advanced practitioners as well as to researchers, and to promote communication between the two groups. In this second CAiSE conference, the program was divided into two types of sessions that were not run in parallel: Technical Paper sessions, with formally reviewed technical papers, and Practice and Experience sessions, with invited speakers and panel discussions. The proceedings include the formally reviewed technical papers and abstracts of the invited presentations. The technical papers present important international (mainly European) work in Information Systems Engineering within such areas as conceptual modelling, prototyping, requirements engineering, design support, software process modelling, tool design, and tool experiences. The abstracts of invited speakers' presentations give an indication of current best industrial practice.

This book discusses the work of German economists Gustav von Schmoller and Adolph Wagner, its influence on the tradition of German and Austrian economic and social thought, and its implications for the discipline today. Schmoller and Wagner integrated philosophical, historical, sociological and political approaches into the science of economics, focusing specifically on economic development. Schmoller, who is considered the head of the second generation of the German Historical School, argued that general propositions of economic theory had to be based on historical-empirical studies. In contrast, Wagner was a systematologist who preferred to start his investigations into economic problems f...

The book studies the origins and evolution of economic textbooks in the nineteenth and early twentieth century, up to the turning point represented by Paul Samuelson’s Economics (1948), which became the template for all the textbooks of the postwar period. The case studies included in the book cover a large part of Europe, the British Commonwealth, the United States and Japan. Each chapter examines various types of textbooks, from those aimed at self-education to those addressed to university students, secondary school students, to the short manuals aimed at the popularisation of political economy among workers and the middle classes. An introductory chapter examines this phenomenon in a comparative and transnational perspective.

Quantifying the Value of RFID and the EPCglobal Architecture Framework in Logistics

The “EPCglobal Architecture Framework” is currently the most accepted technical approach to the Internet of Things and provides a solid foundation for building Business-to-Business information networks based on unique identifications of ‘things’. Lately, the vision of the Internet of Things has been extended to a more holistic approach that integrates sensors as well as actuators and includes non-business stakeholders. A detailed look at the current state of the art in research concerning cost and benefit estimations is provided and the limits of Cost Benefit Sharing for RFID-based IT-infrastructures are explained. In this work a market driven evaluation based on sales potential of i...
