Social Work

Social work, once the rising star of the human service delivery professions has increasingly come under attack from politicians and the media, often following child abuse tragedies and particularly after the election of Margaret Thatcher in 1979. Subsequently private sector managerialism was introduced both to control what social workers do and how, as well as to reduce public expenditure. They had to cope with increased bureaucracy and given stringent targets aimed at rationing resources, leading to deprofessionalisation with organisations', rather than users', needs now dominating. From a critical perspective, this book charts social work's development over the last 150 years, pinpointing the present neo-liberal consensus as being at the root of the profession's current crisis. Notwithstanding the difficulties involved, it calls for a progressive, radical/critical practice based on social justice and social change. The book is essential reading for social work academics, students and experienced practitioners. Equally, social policy academics and students along with those in public policy and social science more generally will find it of interest.

Integrated Wide-Bandwidth Current Sensing

This book provides readers with a single-source reference to current sensing integrated circuit design. It is written in handbook style, including systematic guidelines and implementation examples. The authors focus on the implementation of wide-bandwidth current sensing on a single microchip, toward usage in applications such as sensing, control and optimization of the energy flow in growth areas like industrial electronics, renewable energies, smart grids, electromobility and the Internet of Things. Provides readers with a comprehensive, all-in-one source for current sensing integrated circuit design, including implementation examples; Discusses modeling and optimization of on-chip Rogowski coil and Hall sensor in both lateral and vertical orientation; Includes noise reduction techniques, such as auto-zeroing and chopping; Covers open-loop and closed-loop sensor front-end design; Presents the first on-chip current sensor with a planar coil placed besides a power line to measure internal signal currents and the first off-chip current sensor with a helix-shaped coil for external signal currents in the multi-MHz region.

Professional social work has changed considerably over the last forty years coinciding with the demise of the social democratic consensus of the post-war years and the emergence and now domination of neoliberalism. Rather than the state through the government of the day ensuring citizens' basic needs were met via the welfare state, the belief in free market economics entails people having to be self-reliant and self-responsible. This has involved social work with children and families moving from a helping and supportive role to one that is more authoritarian, this often involving telling parents to change their behaviour and lifestyle or face the consequences. This book outlines the develop...

Microsystems technologies have found their way into an impressive variety of applications, from mobile phones, computers, and displays to smart grids, electric cars, and space shuttles. This multidisciplinary field of research extends the current capabilities of standard integrated circuits in terms of materials and designs and complements them by creating innovative components and smaller systems that require lower power consumption and display better performance. Novel Advances in Microsystems Technologies and their Applications delves into the state of the art and the applications of microsystems and microelectronics-related technologies. Featuring contributions by academic and industrial...
