The current work provides a comprehensive vista on the sciences of the Qur'an as developed in the Shi'i context. It is a systematic presentation of Shi'i literature on various aspects of Qur' anic exegesis. Leading figures of Qur' anic scholarship in the Shi'i world have contributed to this volume, exploring a wide array of subjects such as revelation, methodology of exegesis, hermeneutics, reasons for revelation, definite and indefinite verses, improbability of distortion, and the thematic unity of different chapters of the Qur'an. Also included in this volume are scholarly expositions on four classical Shi'i exegeses, namely al-Tibyan, Majma' al-Bayan, Kanz al-'Irfan and Tafsir of Mulla Sadra. Moreover, three modern masterpieces (Al-Mizan, Nimunih, and Tasnim) authored by twentieth-century Shi'i exegetes in Iran are examined.

What is the nature of the Qur’an? It might seem a straightforward question, but there is no consensus among modern communities of the Qur’an, both Muslim and non-Muslim, about the answer. And why should there be? On numerous occasions throughout history, believers from different schools and denominations, and at different times and places, have agreed to disagree. The Qur’anic interpreters, jurists and theologians of medieval Baghdad, Cairo and Cordoba coexisted peacefully in spite of their diverging beliefs. Until now studies of the Qur'anic sciences have either been partial, brief, or sectarian. In the main, such works have more or less inspired the contribution of the great Shi'a scholars to our understanding of the Qur'anic sciences. This book has been written not only to redress this gap but also to present a new and more balanced view of this important topic. The authors have addressed many more issues than are usually found in a book on Qur'anic sciences, some of which have been hitherto unavailable in English. It is hoped that the book will be a useful addition to the material available to undergraduate students who are studying Islam.

Much of world’s documentary heritage rests in vulnerable, little-known and often inaccessible archives. Many of these archives preserve information that may cast new light on historical phenomena and lead to their reinterpretation. But such rich collections are often at risk of being lost before the history they capture is recorded. This volume celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Endangered Archives Programme at the British Library, established to document and publish online formerly inaccessible and neglected archives from across the globe. From Dust to Digital showcases the historical significance of the collections identified, catalogued and digitised through the Programme, bringing together articles on 19 of the 244 projects supported since its inception. These contributions demonstrate the range of materials documented — including rock inscriptions, manuscripts, archival records, newspapers, photographs and sound archives — and the wide geographical scope of the Programme. Many of the documents are published here for the first time, illustrating the potential these collections have to further our understanding of history.
