What are the central teachings of Islam and in what way are they supposed to progress the spiritual development of human beings? Is Islam just a set of rituals or does it aim to achieve some purpose beyond acts of worship? The following book attempts to answer these questions by offering a fresh reevaluation of the essential message of Islam.

The Tragedy of Karbala

The Tragedy of Karbala

The events of the 10th of Muḥarram in the year 61 AH in which Imam Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, was mercilessly slaughtered in Karbala, Iraq along with his family and friends by the self-proclaimed Caliph, Yazid, son of Muawiyah, is the most tragic episode - not only in the history of Islam - but in the entire annals of human tragedy. Although there were many witnesses to this massacre, most notably 'official reporters' such as Humayd ibn Muslim, the best person to tell us about what transpired on that horrific day is the only adult male who saw the episode unfold and then lived to narrate it - namely Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn as-Sajjad - the son of Imam Husayn ibn Ali. The Tragedy of Karbala is a complete translation of the hadith which chronicles the events of the Day of Ashura as recounted by the 4th Imam - Ali ibn al-Husayn as-Sajjad. This historical narration is based on that which is found in the book Al-Amali as narrated by the late Shaykh Saduq, and is presented here in English along with its original Arabic.

Islam and God-Centricity: Plurality and Mutability of Religion

Islam and God-Centricity: Plurality and Mutability of Religion is the fourth volume in a multi-volume series. In this volume, the notions of 'form' and 'essence' are introduced and defined: they are existential realities, namely they form part of the very structure of existence. As such, the Quran presupposes these notions throughout all its verses generally, and in its discourse on different religions and sharias in particular: the essence of things is one, whereas the forms of their essences are multiple and subject to change. A conundrum throughout Muslim history has been how two of the novel, unique, and central messages of the last of the divinely revealed texts of God - the Quran - hav...

The Fragility of the Lebanese State

In 2024, Lebanon entered the fifth year of a crippling economic crisis that has decimated the value of the Lebanese pound, crippled its medical and education systems, and limited the state provision of essential public services- such as electricity, which is not available for more than a few hours a day by state provision. While all those living in Lebanon feel the effects of these dire circumstances, those from marginalized communities such as migrant and domestic workers, the elderly, children, the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities or poor health, etc. have been disproportionately affected. To add fuel to the fire, the already dire refugee situation in Lebanon has been exasperated...
