A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice "In Daub’s hands the founding concepts of Silicon Valley don’t make money; they fall apart." --The New York Times Book Review From FSGO x Logic: a Stanford professor's spirited dismantling of Silicon Valley's intellectual origins Adrian Daub’s What Tech Calls Thinking is a lively dismantling of the ideas that form the intellectual bedrock of Silicon Valley. Equally important to Silicon Valley’s world-altering innovation are the language and ideas it uses to explain and justify itself. And often, those fancy new ideas are simply old motifs playing dress-up in a hoodie. From the myth of dropping out to the war cry of “disruption,” Daub l...
Like many of the early settlers to the Michigan territory, enticed by the promise of cheap land, Addison Comstock purchased 640 acres along the Raisin River in 1825. Within that decade, the community had been laid out and had both a sawmill and gristmill. Sarah Comstock, Addison's wife, named the village Adrian. The newcomers to the region not only included Easterners, especially from New York and New England, but also increased immigration from the 1840s of Germans and the Irish. As Adrian was a center of the Underground Railroad in Michigan, there was also a notable African American community dating back to the 1830s. By glimpsing at these collected images from the Lenawee County Historical Society, the Siena Heights University Archives, and the private collection of the author of the first 100 years of impressive growth, one sees a community steeped in both progress and tradition.
Adrian Chiles's weekly column Guardian column has gained a cult following for his unique insights into everything from the present tense in history podcasts to his legendary at-home urinal. Chiles never misses. And his targets are the stuff of life, the everyday things we should all stop and think about a little more: favourite spoons, the correct duration of a hug, falling into a bed of wild garlic, or even discovering you have a naked doppleganger on OnlyFans. This bumper collection takes us on a brilliant, bemused tour of British life, delivering offbeat, comforting blasts of truth, humour and warmth. This is a true historical account of war in the air, at sea and on land in the battle for Malta's survival in the Second World War. It was a battle which decided the outcome of the war in North Africa and the Mediterranean. Adrian Warburton, the airman described in the subtitle by Marshal of the Royal Air Force Lord Tedder, went missing in 1944 in a single-seat American aircraft. He had flown at least 395 operational missions mostly from Malta. Unusually for a reconnaissance pilot, 'Warby' as he was known was credited with nine aircraft shot down. He lay undiscovered for sixty years. He is the RAF's most highly decorated photo-recce pilot. In Malta, Adrian met Christina, a stranded dancer tur...

Of late, the fields of astroparticle physics, particle physics and nuclear physics have been developing at a dramatic speed. This book constitutes the proceedings of a symposium intended to highlight some of the main directions being pursued in these related areas, and to seek a commonality among them. The symposium was held to honor the many achievements of Professor Adrian Melissinos, who has contributed to most of the developments addressed at the meeting.
The international creation of typefaces after 1950 was decisively influenced by the Swiss type designer Adrian Frutiger. His Univers typeface and the machine-readable font OCR-B, which was adopted as an ISO standard, are milestones, as is his type for the Paris airports, which set new standards for signage types and evolved into the Frutiger typeface. With his corporate types, he helped to define the public profiles of companies such as the Japanese Shiseido line of cosmetics. In all he created some fifty types, including Ondine, Méridien, Avenir, and Vectora. Based on conversations with Frutiger himself and on extensive research in France, England, Germany, and Switzerland, this publication provides a highly detailed and accurate account of the type designer’s artistic development. For the first time, all of his types – from the design phase to the marketing stage – are illustrated and analyzed with reference to the technology and related types. Hitherto unpublished types that were never realized and more than one hundred logos complete the picture.
