Clinical Neuroendocrinology covers the clinical significance of the advances made in the understanding of relationships between the actions of neurotransmitters and the hypothalamic control of pituitary secretions. This book contains 24 chapters that examine the interactions of target gland secretions with the effects of hypothalamic and pituitary hormones. This book begins with a discussion of the physiological regulation and clinical applications of thyrotropin-stimulating hormone and thyrotropin-releasing hormone. The subsequent chapters are devoted to neuroendocrine aspects, secretion, regulation, and analysis of gonadotropin and gonadotropin-releasing hormone. Other chapters explore the...

A Biographical History of Endocrinology

Establishing endocrinology as a distinct medical specialty was no easy task. This engaging volume chronicles the journey through the stories of the men –and occasional women—who shaped the specialty through the ages. In 108 brief chapters, A Biographical History of Endocrinology illuminates the progress of endocrinology from Hippocrates to the modern day. The author highlights important leaders and their contributions to the field, including these early pioneers: Kos and Alexandria, and the first human anatomy Bartolomeo Eustachi and the adrenal gland Richard Lower and the pituitary gland Thomas Addison and adrenal insufficiency Franz Leydig and testosterone secreting cells Wiliam Stewar...

First published in 1943, Vitamins and Hormones is the longest-running serial published by Academic Press. In the early days of the Serial, the subjects of vitamins and hormones were quite distinct. Now, new discoveries have proved that several of the vitamins function as hormones and many of the substances inferred by the title of the Serial function in signal transduction processes. Accordingly, the Editor-in-Chief has expanded the scope of the serial to reflect this newer understanding of function-structure relationships in cellular communication. The Editorial Board now reflects expertise in the field of hormone action, vitamin action, X-ray crystal structure, physiology, and enzyme mechanisms. Under the capable and qualified editorial leadership of Dr. Gerald Litwack, Vitamins and Hormones continues to publish cutting-edge reviews of interest to endocrinologists, biochemists, nutritionists, pharmacologists, cell biologists, and molecular biologists. The 56th volume of Vitamins and Hormones is a cumulative index of volumes 30 through 55.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY

This book is a comprehensive and accessible exploration of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), one of the most effective forms of psychotherapy available today. Through its pages, the reader will discover how CBT helps people change negative thought patterns and destructive behaviors to significantly improve their mental health. With practical examples, case studies, and clear explanations, the book demonstrates how to apply CBT principles to a variety of psychological problems, from anxiety and depression to eating and personality disorders. This work is not only a guide for professionals and students of psychology, but also for anyone interested in understanding and improving their emotional well-being.

Research Methods in Neurochemistry

With the continued rapid expansion of neurochemical research, there has been no shortage of new developments in methodology for this third volume of Research Methods in Neurochemistry. As in previous volumes we have again tried to provide some balance in the subjects represented. The wisdom of this policy may be questioned since it can lead to delay in publica tion, but there are many approaches to the chemical study of the nervous system and a methods book needs to stand on its own as well as be part of a series. In one respect, however, the present volume departs from this policy, in that we have included two chapters on micromethods for analyzing amines and amino acids, both giving specia...

Mind in Aging

Herein, we present a monograph entitled “Mind in Aging” for young scientists who wish to study traditional Japanese Kampo medicine. This monograph describes more than two decades of our research and represents the work of many young scientists who dedicated their time to accomplish this program. We are sincerely grateful to these participants, and the names of each are listed in the chapter acknowledgments. Life-threatening diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, autoimmune disease, and obesity will hopefully be eliminated sometime in the relatively near future. However, mysteries and diseases of the mind will likely remain unsolved for a longer time. Daily activities of learning and memory retrieval, thinking and thought, and perception all stimulate a feeling of mind. Without learning and memory, thinking and thought, as well as perception, are not enough to recognize self-existence and will not stimulate a feeling of mind. For the past several decades, we have studied learning and memory, thinking and thought, and the sensibility of perception in experimental animals in order to unlock the mysteries of the mind, particularly with regard to aging.

Abstracts of the Sixth International Congress of Pharmacology deals with papers submitted during the pharmacology congress held at Helsinki in 1975. This collection of papers deals with research and development in pharmacology and biotherapeutic drugs. The wide array of subjects deals with the therapeutic implications of controlled drug delivery and the methods of drug application, including pharmacological investigations on cell in a culture. The book also contains papers about the interactions of neurotransmitters and the hypothalamic releasing hormones and toxins as tools in receptor studies. Some papers also deal with behavioral pharmacology that covers drug dependence, narcotic analgesi...

The Neuroendocrine Aspects of Reproduction

Neuroendocrine Aspects of Reproduction contains the proceedings of the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center's Second Symposium on Primate Reproductive Biology held in Beaverton, Oregon, on October 8-9, 1982. The symposium provided a forum for discussing the neuroendocrinology of reproduction in primates and tackled topics ranging from delayed puberty as a factor in human evolution to gonadotropin-releasing hormone neurons and pathways in the primate hypothalamus and forebrain. Comprised of 18 chapters, this book begins with an overview of some basic neuroendocrine mechanisms that influence reproductive processes, followed by a discussion on control of the onset of puberty. Control of ovul...
