Supermaterials

What is a supermaterial? A concise definition is by no means obvious, but a clue can be obtained from the topics discussed here.. In addition to superconductors, the reader will encounter magnetic effects of many kinds, including giant and even colossal ones, organic conductors, photoconductors, and even 400-year-old Japanese ceramics. Processing is a prominent pursuit in supermaterials research, especially but not exclusively of the superconductors. The papers on characterisation and theory break new ground, particularly in pursuit of new optoelectronic phenomena. The parade of new materials recently synthesised, often containing four or more elements, is surprising. But it is in it reporting of new applications that the book stands out: from circuits to sensors, supermaterials are making their impact on society.

Neutrons and Nanoscience offers a unique introduction to the use of neutron scattering methods to characterize and evaluate materials at the nanoscale, a technique of increasing value to materials research, condensed matter physics, biological physics and geosciences. An instructional overview of nanoscience and nanomaterials, paired with the fundamentals and techniques of neutron scattering and instrumentation, provides readers with an authoritative background applicable to a wide scope of scientific disciplines. Applications for thin film magnetism, biomembrane nanoscience, and the nanostructure studies of metals, ceramics and polymers are covered. Analytical treatment of the nano-bio interface, neutrons, photons, and geo-nanoscience complete this up-to-date reference, while providing an informative perspective of neutron capabilities in the future.

On Growth and Form

We have shown that simple power-law dynamics is expected for flexible fractal objects. Although the predicted behavior is well established for linear polymers, the situationm is considerably more complex for colloidal aggregates. In the latter case, the observed K-dependence of (r) can be explained either in terms of non-asymptotic hydrodynamics or in terms of weak power-law polydispersity. In the case of powders (alumina, in particular) apparent fractal behavior seen in static scattering is not found in the dynamics. ID. W. Schaefer, J. E. Martin, P. Wiitzius, and D. S. Cannell, Phys. Metallurgical and Ceramic Protective Coatings

Surface engineering is an increasingly important field and consequently those involved need to be aware of the vast range of technologies available to modify surfaces. This text provides an up-to-date, authoritative exposition of the major condensed phase methods used for producing metallurgical and ceramic coatings. Each method is discussed thoroughly by an expert in that field. In each chapter the principle of the method, its range of applications and technical aspects involved are described. The book not only informs the reader about established technologies familiar only to specialists, but also details activity on the frontier of coating technology providing an insight into those potential technologies not yet fully developed but which should emerge in the near future.

Nanoscale Ferroelectrics and Multiferroics
