Architectures of Colonialism
The question of what heritage is and how we deal with it is not a neutral one. Recent events such as the Black Lives Matter movement and the toppling of monuments have made evident how much the colonial past is inscribed in our built environment; at the same time, colonialism continues to affect memorialization and historiography. Hence, those involved in architectural history are challenged to re-consider their positionality. Whose heritage are colonial sites? Which possibly silenced memories are attached to them? How are archives and material evidence reassessed to bring forward the stories of marginalized subjects? Following the call for decolonization, this volume explores historical methodologies and shows the entanglement of narratives at architectural sites, bringing together archaeology, architectural history, and heritage studies. DELUS. The Journal of the Institute of Landscape and Urban Studies
The pilot issue of DELUS offers a range of diverse insights into landscape and urban questions. It introduces new methods to unpack multiple worlds and narrate manifold stories. The contributions range from unraveling histories of land-body relations through recipes with Luiza Prado de O. Martins, following living fossils and their mythical counterparts with Christina Gruber, working with communities to examine extractive environments with Karin Reisinger, exploring postnatural aesthetics with the Institute for Postnatural Studies, to recording wastelands with Sandra Jasper and developing speculative curricula engaging with overlooked forms of knowledge with Federico Pérez Villoro. As a collection, these contributions address the complex relations between humans, non-humans and their environment across time and space. DELUS is an annual publication that explores emerging themes, topics and methods from landscape and urban studies. Founded in 2022 by the Institute for Landscape and Urban Studies (LUS) at ETH Zurich, it brings academic knowledge to a broader audience and fosters exchange amongst designers, artists, scientists, scholars and students.

Transformation statt Abriss und Neubau, Entwicklung statt Bruch: Zunehmend rückt das Prinzip Weiterbauen als Gegenposition zum Neubau-Paradigma der Moderne in den Fokus von Architektur und Bautechnik. Es versteht das Bauwerk weniger als abzuschließendes Produkt denn als kontinuierlichen Prozess, thematisiert die Kontinuität von Orten und Bauten und wirft neue Fragen nach ihrer Abgeschlossenheit und Autorenschaft, nach Haltbarkeit und Nachhaltigkeit auf. Im Fokus des Bandes stehen neben den technischen und künstlerischen Prozessen von Umbau und Anpassung auch die sich ändernden gesellschaftlichen Wertvorstellungen und Interpretationsmuster, die in der Neuausrichtung vorhandener Bausubstanz durch das Weiterbauen ihren materiellen Ausdruck finden.
Migration und Baukultur
Seit der Antike haben Migrationsbewegungen eine besondere Bedeutung für die Veränderung von Baukunst und -technik. Diese können etwa durch Kriege, politische Repression, freiwillige Entscheidungen oder durch ökonomischen Druck ausgelöst werden. Immer wieder kam und kommt es dabei zu kulturellen Überprägungen, Transformations- und Verdrängungsprozessen, deren Ergebnisse die Stabilität bzw. Wandlungsfähigkeit einer Gesellschaft und ihrer Baukultur verdeutlichen. Die Publikation versammelt Beiträge aus der Archäologie, der Bau- und Bautechnikgeschichte, der Denkmalpflege sowie der Kunst- und Architekturgeschichte. In Einzelfallstudien werden epochenübergreifend die Mechanismen untersucht, die zur Transformation des Bauens als Folge von individuellen und kollektiven Einwanderungen geführt haben.
Die Suche nach Differenz
Denkmalpflege als »westlich-modern« zu vereinnahmen, ließ den Erhalt des Materiellen über den Imperialismus und die Nationalstaatenbildung sowie postkoloniale Diskussionen und kritische Kulturstudien zu einem vermeintlich autoritären Konzept werden. Der inhärente Ethnozentrismus verstellt dabei den Blick auf den Erhalt des kulturellen Erbes als globalen Aushandlungsprozess. Martina Oeter geht den Macht- und Wissensstrukturen in der internationalen Kulturerbepolitik nach und zeigt, dass die Aufwertung des immateriellen Erbes - als demokratische Antwort auf den vorherrschenden Denkmalkult - materielles Kulturerbe abgewertet hat und seither eine Auseinandersetzung mit dessen gesellschaftlichen Werten erschwert.
