Zimbabwe in Transition

Zimbabwe's Transition to Democracy in the post-independence era has been a very difficult one. To date, there have been a number of sustained efforts by various local, regional and international actors to move Zimbabwe towards democracy as well as attempts to find a lasting solution to the political and economic crises that seriously affected the country's progress from the late 1990s. However, these attempts have been less successful mainly because Zimbabwe has complex political and economic problems, with interlocking national, regional and international political and economic dimensions rooted in both historical and contemporary factors and developments. To understand the complexities of ...

"The whole town not only knew what happened here, but had probably seen and heard parts of that day of hell. Some must have been witnesses and others accomplices to murder, torture and brutality. The wind, once my friend and comforter, had become my tormenter and persecutor. Coursing over the granite kopjes, the wind was filled with voices and secrets. The whole town was hiding a secret." 'Beyond Tears' is the story of events that ripped Zimbabwe apart between 2000 and 2002. Eye-witness accounts of anarchy, harassment, intimidation and the foulest abuses of citizens by their own government. "Catherine Buckle provides vivid testimony of the power and destruction inflicted on the country and its people." Martin Meredith author of 'Robert Mugabe: Power Plunder and Tyranny in Zimbabwe.'

A Predictable Tragedy

When the southern African country of Rhodesia was reborn as Zimbabwe in 1980, democracy advocates celebrated the defeat of a white supremacist regime and the end of colonial rule. Zimbabwean crowds cheered their new prime minister, freedom fighter Robert Mugabe, with little idea of the misery he would bring them. Under his leadership for the next 30 years, Zimbabwe slid from self-sufficiency into poverty and astronomical inflation. The government once praised for its magnanimity and ethnic tolerance was denounced by leaders like South African Nobel Prize-winner Desmond Tutu. Millions of refugees fled the country. How did the heroic Mugabe become a hated autocrat, and why were so many outside...

Zimbabwe s New Diaspora

Zimbabwe's crisis since 2000 has produced a dramatic global scattering of people. This volume investigates this enforced dispersal, and the processes shaping the emergence of a new "diaspora" of Zimbabweans abroad, focusing on the most important concentrations in South Africa and in Britain. Not only is this the first book on the diasporic connections created through Zimbabwe's multifaceted crisis, but it also offers an innovative combination of research on the political, economic, cultural and legal dimensions of movement across borders and survival thereafter with a discussion of shifting identities and cultural change. It highlights the ways in which new movements are connected to older flows, and how displacements across physical borders are intimately linked to the reworking of conceptual borders in both sending and receiving states. The book is essential reading for researchers/students in migration, diaspora and postcolonial literary studies.

A fascinating travelogue and political expose of the scarred country of Zimbabwe 'This beautifully written history meticulously exposes, and in good time too, precisely from what and from who Zimbabwe's voters will need protection before and during any future election' Independent 'Barclay writes a shimmering and virtuoso foreign correspondent prose' Guardian Zimbabwe is a country both blessed and cursed. British diplomat Philip Barclay witnessed the downfall of what used to be Africa's finest country, culminating in the tumultuous events of 2008 when Zimbabwe's people voted against Robert Mugabe. But their desire for change was denied as vicious squads of indoctrinated youths loyal to the ageing dictator launched a campaign of murder, rape and destruction. In the wake of such terror, the economy and public services collapsed, leading to widespread poverty and epidemics of diseases that Zimbabwe had not seen in living memory. This electrifying account records the violent excesses of a hated clique prepared to do anything to cling to power. It is also a personal story of the extraordinary resilience of Zimbabwe's people.

What did the future hold for Rhodesia's white population at the end of a bloody armed conflict fought against settler colonialism? Would there be a place for them in newly independent Zimbabwe? PIONEERS, SETTLERS, ALIENS, EXILES sets out the terms offered by Robert Mugabe in 1980 to whites who opted to stay in the country they thought of as their home. The book traces over the next two decades their changing relationshipwith the country when the post-colonial government revised its symbolic and geographical landscape and reworked codes of membership. Particular attention is paid to colonial memories and white interpellation in the official account of the nation's rebirth and indigene discourses, in view of which their attachment to the place shifted and weakened. As the book describes the whites' trajectory from privileged citizens to persons of disputed membership and contested belonging, it provides valuable background information with regard to the land and governance crises that engulfed Zimbabwe at the start of the twenty-first century.

The Zimbabwean countryside has many moods, an infinite variety of faces. In striking contradiction of the image held by many who have not visited the land between the Limpopo and Zambezi Rivers, Zimbabwe is not a vast expanse of near-emptiness, of unrelieved sun-brown bush, of dust and burning skies. The dust and heat are there, some of the time and in some parts. But so are the gracious lakes, the fresh woods and pastures, the cool streams and high mountain peaks. Zimbabwe's enchantment is heightened by magnificent wildlife. Its concentration of elephant is one of the greatest in the world and the many game reserves and national parks abound with a breathtaking variety of animals. Kingly li...
