Information-based methods for neuroimaging: analyzing structure, function and dynamics

The aim of this Research Topic is to discuss the state of the art on the use of Information-based methods in the analysis of neuroimaging data. Information-based methods, typically built as extensions of the Shannon Entropy, are at the basis of model-free approaches which, being based on probability distributions rather than on specific expectations, can account for all possible non-linearities present in the data in a model-independent fashion. Mutual Information-like methods can also be applied on interacting dynamical variables described by time-series, thus addressing the uncertainty reduction (or information) in one variable by conditioning on another set of variables. In the last years...

Advances in Cognitive Research, Artificial Intelligence and Neuroinformatics

This book reports on theoretical and experimental research answering key questions in neuroscience, philosophy of mind, and cognitive research. It gives a special emphasis on findings achieved within the territory of the former U.S.S.R, which has remained largely unknown to an international readership. The volume gathers authoritative studies on cognitive development, consciousness, attention and perception. It covers research on eye movements, language, speech and semantics, emotion, as well as brain functional states, and a variety of decision-making processes. It also highlights important advances in cognitive robotics and artificial intelligence, discussing brain-computer interfaces and ...

Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Computational Science and Technology

This book gathers the proceedings of the Seventh International Conference on Computational Science and Technology (ICCST 2021), held in Labuan, Malaysia, on 28–29 August 2021. The respective contributions offer practitioners and researchers a range of new computational techniques and solutions, identify emerging issues, and outline future research directions, while also showing them how to apply the latest large-scale, high-performance computational methods.

Brain–Computer Interfaces Handbook: Technological and Theoretical Advances provides a tutorial and an overview of the rich and multi-faceted world of Brain–Computer Interfaces (BCIs). The authors supply readers with a contemporary presentation of fundamentals, theories, and diverse applications of BCI, creating a valuable resource for anyone involved with the improvement of people’s lives by replacing, restoring, improving, supplementing or enhancing natural output from the central nervous system. It is a useful guide for readers interested in understanding how neural bases for cognitive and sensory functions, such as seeing, hearing, and remembering, relate to real-world technologies....

Current Research in Neuroadaptive Technology

Current Research in Neuroadaptive Technology provides readers with insight into the state-of-the-art field of neuroadaptive technology. The book covers the breadth and depth of current research in this field, covering a range of application domains in sufficient technical detail. The multidisciplinary character of this field means that the publication of key research is often fragmented across specialist journals. Here, the editors have consolidated current research, carefully selecting key topics that are clustered around the concept of neuroadaptive technology. In summary, the book meets the needs of readers by consolidating multidisciplinary research around a nascent technological concept...

This book develops the mathematical tools essential for students in the life sciences to describe interacting systems and predict their behavior. From predator-prey populations in an ecosystem, to hormone regulation within the body, the natural world abounds in dynamical systems that affect us profoundly. Complex feedback relations and counter-intuitive responses are common in nature; this book develops the quantitative skills needed to explore these interactions. Differential equations are the natural mathematical tool for quantifying change, and are the driving force throughout this book. The use of Euler’s method makes nonlinear examples tractable and accessible to a broad spectrum of e...
