Lucrarea de față își propune studierea modului în care iconografia monetară a Imperiului Roman Târziu/Bizantin, din perioada cuprinsă între secolele al IV-lea și al XII-lea, reflectă în temele sale transformările de ordin politic, social și cultural-religios prin care a trecut acesta. Actualitatea temei propuse este susținută în primul rând de necesitatea valorificării unui izvor istoric mai puțin utilizat ca atare. Studiul ne oferă posibilitatea evidențierii unor aspecte importante ale politicii imperiale romane târzii/bizantine, care, interpretate în context, aruncă o oarecare lumină asupra dinamicilor sociale, politice, culturale și religioase ale Imperiului. Metodele principale pe care le voi utiliza pentru atingerea scopului lucrării de față sunt: metoda istorică și cea comparativă.
