Truths Up His Sleeve: The Times of Michael Cacoyannis
This first critical biography of radio broadcaster, stage director, and auteur filmmaker Michael Cacoyannis examines his prolific body of work within the socio-political context of his times. Best known as a bold modernist for triple-Oscar-winner ‘Zorba the Greek’, Michael likewise was hailed as an astute classicist for his inventive interpretations of Euripides. Working across several continents and languages, he forwarded feminist, humanist, and pacifist agendas, as he further innovated crafty LGBT narratives of unprecedented artistry and complexity. Despite intense persecution during the Cold War red scare and lavender scare, his casts and crews of frugal cosmopolitans critiqued racism, militarism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia. Avoiding censorship, job loss, and jail, Michael thereby laid foundations for the 1990s new queer cinema and set the stage for empowering dramas of socio-economic justice in the third millennium. Over his long life and productive career, Michael exposed and espoused the vital truths up his sleeve.
African American Women's Literature in Spain
This volume brings forward a descriptive approach to the translation and reception of African American women’s literature in Spain. Drawing from a multidisciplinary theoretical and methodological framework, it traces the translation history of literature produced by African American women, seeking to uncover changing strategies in translation policies as well as shifts in interests in the target context, and it examines the topicality of this cohort of authors as frames of reference for Spanish critics and reviewers. Likewise, the reception of the source literature in the Spanish context is described by reconstructing the values that underlie judgements in different reception sources. Finally, this book addresses the specific problem of the translation of Black English into Spanish. More precisely, it pays attention to the ideological and the ethical implications of translation choices and the effect of the latter on the reception of literary texts.

Hemingway en la España taurina
La trayectoria profesional de Alfonso Martínez Berganza abarcó tres décadas de la historia del periodismo español del siglo pasado en las que desarrolló su actividad en los puestos y medios más diversos, desde editorialista de la “Tercera Página” del diario ‘Pueblo’ hasta su labor en RNE, donde, como señaló su obituario, “supo ser jefe en momentos difíciles de la vida política española”. Durante su carrera fue galardonado con diversos premios periodísticos y literarios, entre los que se cuenta el I Premio Hemingway de Periodismo para artículos de tema taurino. ‘Hemingway en la España taurina’ es una iluminadora inmersión en los escenarios taurinos del nobel norteamericano. This collection of essays brings together an international group of scholars who discuss various facets of the American South in popular culture, literature, the arts, and throughout history. It includes reflections on place, on the importance of memory in shaping individual identity, and on race, class and gender. All the contributions confirm Howard’s Zinn’s idea that the South “is not damnable, but marvelously useful, as a mirror in which the nation can see its blemishes magnified, so that it will hurry to correct them.” This volume sheds light on the “marvelous” sides of the South though it does not overlook its darker ones, thus making it possible to better understand this peculiar region.

La metamorfosis de la novela utópica en ficción distópica forma parte de la historia natural de un género literario que hoy prefiere relatar las variedades inacabables de futuros de pesadilla que la búsqueda de la justicia y el mejor gobierno propios del utopismo clásico. Esta monografía constituye la primera presentación sistemática de la distopía en la literatura de los Estados Unidos, desde sus orígenes hasta la actualidad. Partiendo de un intento definitorio, se aborda la producción de autores estadounidenses cronológicamente, desde sus orígenes en el siglo XIX hasta nuestros días, en permanente diálogo con su contexto histórico y analizando el grado de acierto de sus profecías. Se profundiza también aquí en las formas que adopta la distopía en su relación con algunos de los temas que vertebran la cultura contemporánea: la otredad, el feminismo, la ecología y la literatura juvenil, responsable principal de la popularidad actual de este género literario.
Del paraíso ultramarino al infierno colonial
Esta historia sobre la temprana colonización de Virginia (siglos XVI-XVII) describe la evolución de estos territorios desde su concepción como un nuevo paraíso ultramarino, poniendo en relación las expectativas imperiales y la dinámica histórica del primer asentamiento inglés en el espacio norteamericano, hasta su transformación en un infierno colonial a causa de la resistencia de los nativos. Se analizan aquí la importancia de la literatura de viajes como motor de la expansión ultramarina inglesa, la construcción de representaciones (textuales y visuales) sobre la otredad indígena y el impacto cultural de la experiencia americana en la metrópoli, especialmente por la formulación de desarrollos intelectuales y literarios de alcance universal. Asimismo, el énfasis en la dimensión del conflicto interétnico revela una trama de debilidad, frustración, autoritarismo y violencia colonial, que se proyectó descarnadamente contra los indígenas –tal como evidencia la historia de Pocahontas– y también contra los colonos de común condición, que vieron ahogados sus sueños de emancipación en el Nuevo Mundo.
