Y. S. Brenner is an economist whose main concern is with development, and this attitude is reflected in his approach to economic history. He begins this seminal study in the era of the Reformation in Europe, and bases it on the hypothesis that once started, economic progress will spread over ever-increasing parts of the earth wherever and whenever conditions become suitable. From this point of view, he examines the nature of the impediments which prevent the more rapid and general progress of mankind towards greater material affluence, while at the same time considering the positive growth promoting factors in the various economies. Thus, he provides an analysis of economic progress in the de...

The study of Islam since the advent of 9/11 has made a significant resurgence. However, much of the work produced since then has tended to focus on the movements that not only provide aid to their fellow Muslims, but also have political and at times violent agendas. This tendency has led to a dearth of research on the wider Muslim aid and development scene. Focusing on the role and impact of Islam and Islamic Faith Based Organisations (FBOs), an arena that has come to be regarded by some as the 'invisible aid economy', Islam and Development considers Islamic theology and its application to development and how Islamic teaching is actualized in case studies of Muslim FBOs. It brings together contributions from the disciplines of theology, sociology, politics and economics, aiming both to raise awareness and to function as a corrective step within the development studies literature.

Pollution and the Struggle for the World Product

Since the early 1970s, observers have noted that complying with environmental regulations might be a significant new factor in determining the locations of industries involved in world trade. Two related hypotheses have been offered to explain how environmental regulations are altering international comparative advantage in industrial production: first, that stringent regulations push industries out of the United States and other advanced industrial nations; second, that less developed countries compete to attract multinational industries by minimizing their own regulations.

A World Divided

A World Divided

This 1976 volume originated in the mood of disillusion and despair which followed the Third United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in Santiago in 1972. The prospects for cooperation between rich and poor nations seemed poor and new policies and instruments needed to considered if the interests of the rich and poor nations were not to become even more unbalanced in favour of the rich. The contributors to this volume consider what unexploited possibilities might be open to the less developed countries, both jointly and individually, in international affairs, which would generate a more equitable outcome. The issues addressed in these papers were, at the time of publication, of immediate relevance following the success of oil producing countries in revising prices, worldwide inflation, famine in the poorest countries, recession in industrial countries. Simultaneously, the less developed countries were declaring the need for a new international economic order, which this volume discusses.
