Alison Nicholas: Walking Tall

Alison Nicholas, MBE, is one of Great Britain's most successful golfers. In a professional career spanning more than 20 years, she claimed 18 tournament wins including the British Open, topped the Ladies European Tour Order of Merit and, in 1997, won the most prestigious championship in golf - the US Open. Her aggregate ten-under-par total was, at the time, the lowest recorded in the history of the championship and led to her becoming The Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year, and the LET Players' Player of the Year. In turn, Alison is well known for her Solheim Cup exploits. She played in six, and captained the European team to a famous victory at Killeen Castle in 2011. Images of the team celebrating in front of the windswept castle have become iconic. In this candid and entertaining book, Alison explores her years on both the LET and LPGA Tours, the ups and downs, her tournament records, her faith, and - of course - the Solheim Cup. Filled with anecdotes from the other side of the ropes, behind-the-scenes insights, and images from her private photo collection, the book charts the hard work, focus, attitude and good times that led to Alison Nicholas Walking Tall.

With his Miller's Tale, Chaucer transformed a colorless Middle Dutch account into the lively, dramatic story of raunchy Nicholas, sexy Alison, foolish John and squeamish Absolon. This book focuses on the ways Chaucer made his narrative more effective through dialogue, scene division, music, visual effects and staging. The author pays special attention to the description of John the carpenter's house, the suspension of the three tubs from the beams, and the famous shot-window through which the story's bawdy climax is enacted. The book's second half covers more than 30 of the tale's retellings--translations, adaptations, bowdlerized versions for children, coloring books, novels, musicals, plays and films--and examines the ways the retellers have followed Chaucer in dramatizing the story, giving it new life on stage and screen. The Miller's Tale has had many lives--it promises to have many more.

John Neary shows that the theological dichotomy of via negativa (which posits the authentic experience of God as absence, darkness, silence) and via affirmativa (which emphasizes presence, images, and the sounds of the earth) is an overlooked key to examining and comparing the works of John Fowles and John Updike. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of both Christian and secular existentialism within the modern theology of Barth and Levinas and the contemporary critical theory of Derrida and J. Hillis Miller, Neary demonstrates the ultimate affinity of these authors who at first appear such opposites. He makes clear that Fowles's postmodernist, metafictional experiments reflect the stark exis...

“Curious, if True”

The fantastic has occupied the literary imagination of readers and scholars across historical, theoretical, and cultural contexts. Representations of the fantastic in literature rely on formal and generic types, tropes, and archetypes to mediate between depictions of “fantasy” and “reality.” Present in myth and folklore, the gothic and neo-gothic, and contemporary and mainstream fantasy, the fantastic reach stretches into many conceptions of literature over time. “Curious, if True”: The Fantastic in Literature presents recent articles by graduate students on the fantastic and makes connections across category, genre, and historical periods. Fantasy is used as an organizing topic,...
