Topological Nonlinear Analysis II

The main purpose of the present volume is to give a survey of some of the most significant achievements obtained by topological methods in nonlin ear analysis during the last three decades. It is intended, at least partly, as a continuation of Topological Nonlinear Analysis: Degree, Singularity and Varia tions, published in 1995. The survey articles presented are concerned with three main streams of research, that is topological degree, singularity theory and variational methods, They reflect the personal taste of the authors, all of them well known and distinguished specialists. A common feature of these articles is to start with a historical introduction and conclude with recent results, g...

Progress in Variational Methods

In the last forty years, nonlinear analysis has been broadly and rapidly developed. Lectures presented in the International Conference on Variational Methods at the Chern Institute of Mathematics in Tianjin of May 2009 reflect this development from different angles. This volume contains articles based on lectures in the following areas of nonlinear analysis: critical point theory, Hamiltonian dynamics, partial differential equations and systems, KAM theory, bifurcation theory, symplectic geometry, geometrical analysis, and celestial mechanics. Combinations of topological, analytical (especially variational), geometrical, and algebraic methods in these researches play important roles. In this proceedings, introductory materials on new theories and surveys on traditional topics are also given. Further perspectives and open problems on hopeful research topics in related areas are described and proposed. Researchers, graduate and postgraduate students from a wide range of areas in mathematics and physics will find contents in this proceedings are helpful.

When f =0and f = 0 this kind of problem was 0 1 well studied by Lasiecka and Tataru [15] for a very general model of nonlinear functions f (s),i=0,1, but assuming that f (s)s? 0, that is, f represents, for i i i each i, an attractive force.

Nonlinear Analysis and its Applications to Differential Equations

This work, consisting of expository articles as well as research papers, highlights recent developments in nonlinear analysis and differential equations. The material is largely an outgrowth of autumn school courses and seminars held at the University of Lisbon and has been thoroughly refereed. Several topics in ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations are the focus of key articles, including: * periodic solutions of systems with p-Laplacian type operators (J. Mawhin) * bifurcation in variational inequalities (K. Schmitt) * a geometric approach to dynamical systems in the plane via twist theorems (R. Ortega) * asymptotic behavior and periodic solutions for Navier--Stokes equations (E. Feireisl) * mechanics on Riemannian manifolds (W. Oliva) * techniques of lower and upper solutions for ODEs (C. De Coster and P. Habets) A number of related subjects dealing with properties of solutions, e.g., bifurcations, symmetries, nonlinear oscillations, are treated in other articles. This volume reflects rich and varied fields of research and will be a useful resource for mathematicians and graduate students in the ODE and PDE community.

A collection of research articles originating from the Workshop on Nonlinear Analysis and Applications held in Bergamo in July 2001. Classical topics of nonlinear analysis were considered, such as calculus of variations, variational inequalities, critical point theory and their use in various aspects of the study of elliptic differential equations and systems, equations of Hamilton-Jacobi, Schrödinger and Navier-Stokes, and free boundary problems. Moreover, various models were focused upon: travelling waves in supported beams and plates, vortex condensation in electroweak theory, information theory, non-geometrical optics, and Dirac-Fock models for heavy atoms.
