In the first book-length study of the whole lifespan in Old English verse, Harriet Soper reveals how poets depicted varied paths through life, including their staging of entanglements between human life courses and those of the nonhuman or more-than-human. While Old English poetry sometimes suggests that uniform patterns shape each life, paralleling patristic traditions of the ages of man, it also frequently disrupts a sense of steady linearity through the life course in striking ways, foregrounding moments of sudden upheaval over smooth continuity, contingency over predictability, and idiosyncrasy over regularity. Advancing new readings of a diverse range of Old English poems, Soper draws on an array of supporting contexts and theories to illuminate these texts, unearthing their complex and fascinating depictions of ageing through life. Although there have been many attempts to apply the ideas of psychoanalysis to political thought, this book is the first to identify the political project inherent in the fundamental tenets of psychoanalysis. And this political project, Todd McGowan contends, provides an avenue for emancipatory politics after the failure of Marxism in the twentieth century. Where others seeking the political import of psychoanalysis have looked to Freud's early work on sexuality, McGowan focuses on Freud's discovery of the death drive and Jacques Lacan's elaboration of this concept. He argues that the self-destruction occurring as a result of the death drive is the foundational act of emancipation around which we should construct our political philosophy. Psychoanalysis offers the possibility for thinking about emancipation not as an act of overcoming loss but as the embrace of loss. It is only through the embrace of loss, McGowan suggests, that we find the path to enjoyment, and enjoyment is the determinative factor in all political struggles--and only in a political project that embraces the centrality of loss will we find a viable alternative to global capitalism.
Cognitive approaches to early medieval texts have tended to focus on the mind in isolation. By examining the interplay between mental and physical acts deployed in Old English poetry and prose, this study identifies new patterns and offers new perspectives. J O S E P H YO S S I A R O N (1947-2010) Joseph Yossi Aron was born in 1947 in Satumare, Romania and spent his fi rst 4 years in Linz Displaced Persons Camp, Austria. In 1951, at the tender age of 4, Joseph Aron and his parents arrived in New York and settled in Boro Park. Josephs parents, Holocaust survivors, worked tirelessly to give him a fi ne Jewish education and a love of family. As a young boy he was privileged to sing with Cantor Moshe Kusevitskys Choir at Temple Beth- El. Josephs love for Jewish music and abilities as a Cantor enabled him to be the High Holy Days Cantor for some years at the Baldwin Jewish Center. His work as an airline consultant took him to over 100 countries where he helped modernize their airline industries. Josephs interest in the native culture endeared him to many people. Until the last moment of his life, Joseph never forgot the tragedy the Holocaust brought upon his own family and Jewish people and worked tirelessly to ensure that their memory will never be forgotten. While bravely fi ghting his devastating illness, he managed to complete this poem book just before he passed way in July 2010 at the young age of 63.
