Amy Johnson

Adoration surrounded Amy Johnson throughout most of the 1930s. Around the world people admired this young woman who had flown solo from England to Australia in a small single-engined biplane, a woman with less than 100 hours' flying experience.

Amy Johnson

In May 1930, Amy Johnson, a typist from Hull, took off from Croydon Airport with a thermos flask and a packet of sandwiches to try to beat the world solo record to Australia. She arrived, sun-blistered and with grease on her face, after weeks of flying a second-hand, open-cockpit biplane with no radio communication and the most basic of maps. Her adventures inspired a world struggling with the devastating effects of the Depression and made her into a celebrity overnight. She married Scottish playboy Jim Mollison, and together 'The Flying Sweethearts' broke records, mixed with the Mayfair Set, Amelia Earhart and Hollywood stars. But her tempestuous marriage was soon to crumble and she resumed her love affair with speed, taking up gliding and rally driving, and finding solace with a French millionaire. Her plane disappeared over the Thames Estuary during the Second World War, sparking rumours which are still being investigated today. Her body was never found.

The Little Book of Big Change

Little changes can make a big, big difference! In The Little Book of Big Change, psychologist Amy Johnson shows you how to rewire your brain and overcome your bad habits—once and for all. No matter what your bad habit is, you have the power to change it. Drawing on a powerful combination of neuroscience and spirituality, this book will show you that you are not your habits. In this light, habits and addictio...

"This is an extensive, fully-researched biography of Amy Johnson, Britain's most famous aviatrix. Unto the Skies takes readers from the early days of her childhood and adolescence in Hull, through to her estrangement from her family in London, to the point where her love of flying led to the fame she later, albeit reluctantly, gained after her epic 1930 Australia flight. The story of Amy's death is still surrounded by mystery, after she crashed into the Thames estuary and was drowned; her body was never recovered. Her story still serves as an inspiration to many, being Britain's first qualified woman ground engineer - despite being told she would never be a flier - and completing her world-famous solo flight at the age of 26, before other setting other records. The story of her life will be widely enjoyed."--Publisher description.

Sky Roads of the World

In 1939, when this Vintage Words of Wisdom title was first published, only 36 years had elapsed since the Wright brothers had made the first flight in a powered aeroplane. Yet in these few years, as Amy Johnson explains, the world had become a smaller place, shrunk by the achievements of pioneer aviators who established air routes connecting cities and peoples across the globe. Amy Johnson was one of these pioneers of aviation history, achieving remarkable fame for her many record-breaking flights during her short life - she died aged just 37 piloting an aircraft on behalf of the Air Transport Auxiliary in 1941. In May 1930 she became the first woman to fly from Great Britain to Australia an...

Top FlightRAF Lakenheath It is autumn of 2015, and there are cozier places to be than the cockpit of a US F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet. But there is one US Air Force pilot who has taken off from RAF Lakenheath for a test flight over the North Sea near Scotland before returning back to the RAF base in Suffolk. If all checks are normal, Major Thom will be heading back to the US, to his home, with his unit and squadron. His flight plan is simple, the fuel tank full, and after a few flight checks as required prior to all long haul flights, he would be back at the officers mess, in time for a drink with his squadron pilots. But then he suffers cockpit failures and loses radio contact. He resorts to ...
