Modal Adjectives
The book revisits the notion of deontic modality from the perspective of an understudied category in the modal domain, viz. adjectives. On the basis of synchronic and diachronic corpus studies, it analyses the semantics of English adjectives like essential and appropriate, and uses this to refine traditional definitions of deontic modality, which are mainly based on the study of modal verbs. Tiger in the Dark
""The year 1985 is drawing to a close. I am 25 and pregnant with my first child, and something just feels wrong."" In Tiger in the Dark, Marisette Edwards-van Linden van den Heuvell shares the harrowing and yet uplifting story of her fight with cancer. Since she was 12 years old, she held two deep beliefs: that she wanted and would have children, and that she would not live to see her 30th birthday. These beliefs remained submerged until circumstances brought them into direct conflict, when they met head on in 1985. Well into her first pregnancy, an odd and unexpected ache in her shoulder changed her happy life. The diagnosis of this seemingly insignificant ache was one no one ever wants to hear - a rare cancer called sarcoma. Tiger in the Dark follows Marisette's fight with cancer compounded by her first pregnancy, which occurred at the same time. Reconnecting Form and Meaning
This volume is intended as a celebration of Kristin Davidse’s work and its impact within the broad traditions of cognitive, functional and usage-based grammars. Reflecting this wide functionalist lens, the contributions develop ideas central to Neo-Firthian theories of grammar (in particular, Semiotic Grammar and SFL), the Prague School, Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG), and broader cognitive-functional (e.g. Construction Grammar) and usage-based approaches (e.g. Entrenchment-and-Conventionalization theory, corpus-based sociolinguistics). Transnational Labour History
There has been a growing recognition amongst scholars that labour historians need to look beyond national borders in order to place the history of the working classes into a much broader context than has hitherto been the case. Whilst studies focused on individual countries are essential, it is only by comparing and contrasting the experiences across time and space that a true understanding of the subject can be attempted. Professor Marcel van der Linden, has contributed much to the debate on cross-border processes and comparisons. This volume makes available in English a collection of twelve of his most important essays on the theme of transnational labour history.
