Mathias Kessler
The work of Mathias Kessler (*1968) critiques and re-imagines the contemporary concept of nature. Quoting from art history, philosophy, and ecopolitical debates, he restages representations of natural processes with humor and gravitas. Romantic painting, land art, and digital renderings compete and collide in order to unhinge familiar oppositions: nature/culture; representation/experience; ideology/aesthetics. For example, the viewer does not know whether the images are photographs of a spectacle of nature or perhaps digitalized artificial landscapes: in the installation The Sea of Ice, there is a picture featuring icebergs as lifeless Hollywood sets staged in wan light, and the viewer is invited to combine looking at the miniature reproduction of a masterpiece in the freezer of a refrigerator with a sip from a bottle of the beer cooling in the lower compartment.
De kinderen van Barroy
Het vierde deel in de veelgeprezen Noorse romanreeks van Roy Jacobsen over de familie Barrøy Na een lange reis door heel Noorwegen keert Ingrid eindelijk terug naar het eiland Barrøy. De oorlog is voorbij, maar de sporen van de strijd zijn nog overal zichtbaar. Collaborateurs worden met de nek aangekeken; sommigen nemen zelfs wraak op hen. Anderen willen gewoon de pijnlijke jaren achter zich laten. Op een dag arriveert er een jongen op het eiland. Wanneer zijn vader verdwenen blijkt, neem Ingrid de verantwoordelijkheid op zich en adopteert hem. Zo wordt Mathias onderdeel van de kleine gemeenschap op Barrøy. Het eilandleven is even zwaar als altijd en het lijkt alsof de tijd er heeft stilgestaan. Dan komen er brieven uit Oslo en Trondheim, die vertellen over grote maatschappelijke veranderingen. Welke verhalen moet Ingrid delen met de anderen en wat houdt ze voor zichzelf? Welke toekomst ziet zij voor ogen? De kinderen van Barrøy gaat over ouderschap, over deel uitmaken van een gemeenschap en leven onder zware omstandigheden. Det är romaner om en liten ö i Nordnorge, men också berättelsen om en osedvanligt modig och stark kvinna som är villig att offra allt för att rädda sin familj och sitt ursprung.

British photographer Tariq Zaidi presents a fashion subculture of Kinshasa & Brazzaville: La Sape, Societe des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Elegantes. Its followers are known as 'Sapeurs' ('Sapeuses' for women). Most have ordinary day jobs as taxi-drivers, tailors and gardeners, but as soon as they clock off they transform themselves into debonair dandies. Sashaying through the streets they are treated like rock stars - turning heads, bringing 'joie de vivre' to their communities and defying their circumstances.
