The Enzymology of the Cell Surface Tension at the Cell Surface

obvious properties, its structure, composition, electrical properties, me chanical properties, and most particularly, its permeability properties. None of these properties are obviously associated with surface enzymes. What are the functions of the cell surface that may require the presence of enzymes? From a purely hypothetical point of view, the cellular activities in which cell surface enzymes are potentially functional can be divided into two categories; first, those activities related to the production and maintenance of the cell surface structure itself, and second, those activities which are concerned with interactions between the cell and its environment. During growth of a cell, as ...

This volume, along with Part A and Part B, is dedicated to a description of the instruments, samples, protocols, and analyses that belong to cryo-EM. It emphasizes the relatedness of the ideas, instrumentation, and methods underlying all cryo-EM approaches, which allow practitioners to easily move between them. Within each section, the articles are ordered according to the most common symmetry of the sample to which their methods are applied. * Includes time-tested core methods and new innovations applicable to any researcher * Methods included are useful to both established researchers and newcomers to the field * Relevant background and reference information given for procedures can be used as a guide

Marine bioprospecting is a highly topical subject - in both applied and basic research - but, as yet, the marine ecosystem is a relatively unexplored source of natural bioactive substances with potential therapeutic activity. This book addresses the use of marine enzymes in biocatalysis through a series of chapters from leading scientists within academic and industrial fields. Biocatalytic processes can take advantage of the habitat-related properties of marine enzymes, such as salt tolerance, hyperthermostability, barophilicity, cold adaptivity, and so on, whilst also taking into consideration substrate specificity and affinity. These evolved properties are linked to the metabolic functions...

Enzymes in Clinical Chemistry presents the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Enzymes in Clinical Chemistry, held in Ghent, Belgium, on April 14–16, 1961. This book provides information pertinent to the application of enzymes in clinical chemistry. Organized into 16 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the alterations to serum and plasma enzymes that represent subtle protein modifications associated with disease states. This text then provides a comparison of the Michaelis constants of particular tissue alkaline phophotases with those of serum alkaline phosphotase from several pathological states. Other chapters consider the origin of metabolic changes in leucocytes, including the genetic metabolic defects, the intrinsic disturbances arising in leucocytes themselves, and the blood metabolite or hormone concentrations. This book discusses as well the action of amine oxidases. This book is a valuable resource for clinical chemists, chemical pathologists, enzymologists, scientists, research workers, and students.
