Andre Nguyen Van Chau was born in Vietnam in 1935. "Where My Heart Is", his first collection of poems has only faint echoes from his his two collections of short stories, published in 2015. Indeed, " "Night and Day", and "Journeys into Darkness and Light' offer scenes that one way or another touch the real life of the author. "Where My Heart Is" contains poems which if taken individually may simply express emotions of the moment, but when taken as a whole may reveal his deepest feelings of two decades when the poems were written. Taken as a whole, the poems touch the universal sentiments of human nature. Each poem appears to be a window open to the world outside and revealing what is otherwise hidden in his soul.

Born in Vietnam in 1935, Andre Nguy n V n Chau grew up in the midst of wars; enduring intense emotions ranging between hopes and disappointment to joys and sorrows. Many of the stories he penned in 'Journeys into Darkness and Light' set tragic characters against terrible odds. Most of them triumphed over their despair, or accepted their demise with superhuman courage. Later in his life the author lived and worked in scores of countries where men and women from different parts of the world, especially in Africa, shared the same joys and sorrows with their Vietnamese contemporaries. He spoke of them and shared their stories with the same tenderness, complicity, and emotional intensity. The brevity of these stories considerably enhances the general theme. It highlights the loneliness, alienation, terror in the face of the passing of time and death, in the characters, and also their surging moments of happiness and hope."

The Miracle of Hope

Written by a personal friend of Cardinal Thuan, this moving biography—containing over 70 photographs and writing excerpts—chronicles the life of the man Pope John Paul II said was “...marked by a heroic configuration with Christ on the cross.” From a prisoner in a communist jail cell to a leader of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace in Rome, Francis Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan remained a man of unshakable faith and undying hope.

After successfully launching "Journeys into Darkness and Light" a collection of short stories in April 2015, Andre Nguyễn Văn Chau penned three longer fiction works included within "Night and Day." These multi-faceted stories follow the characters into dark despair so they can overcome their ordeals in order to start believing again. The point of departure might be sin, crime, or a moment of weakness, but the end-game is redemption, a violent confrontation with fate, and enlightenment. Always depicting the men and women of his stories with tenderness and respect Van Chau illustrates their pain, defeat, triumph, and joy as if these emotions were his own. When the final confrontation leads to the possibility of redemption or an invitation to holiness, you know you will walk away from these stories with a new perspective.

INTRODUCTION Vietnam is a country of natural beauty with a coastline of sandy beaches stretching about 2000 miles (3225 km) from the northern to the southern tip of the South China Sea. Along the coast, fishing is the main livelihood. The majority of Vietnamese people are Kinh race people (87%) with the remaining of 53 different ethnic minority groups. For more than 2000 years, the country has been subjected to a near continuing series of foreign occupations from China, France, Japan, and America. One consequence of these occupations is the lasting influence on Vietnamese cuisine. Among Vietnamese dishes, perhaps the best known in the West is Pho, a noodle soup. Another is the deep-fried spr...

Predicting Leader Survival in Covert Operations from Congo to Cuba

The life of a ruler is ephemeral. A lucky few exit office through retirement or old age, but most rulers have short tenures, often ended by violent means. The overthrow of rulers by their rivals is a common theme throughout world history, and this strategy remains a popular choice in contemporary warfare. However, despite the frequency of regime change, very little is discussed in international relations about covert regime change and its effects on leader survival. Predicting Leader Survival in Covert Operations from Congo to Cuba explores the unique relationship between covert action and leader survival, specifically discussing how leadership styles and personality traits influence this relationship.

Covert Capital

The capital of the U.S. Empire after World War II was not a city. It was an American suburb. In this innovative and timely history, Andrew Friedman chronicles how the CIA and other national security institutions created a U.S. imperial home front in the suburbs of Northern Virginia. In this covert capital, the suburban landscape provided a cover for the workings of U.S. imperial power, which shaped domestic suburban life. The Pentagon and the CIA built two of the largest office buildings in the country there during and after the war that anchored a new imperial culture and social world. As the U.S. expanded its power abroad by developing roads, embassies, and villages, its subjects also arri...

Chinese in San Jose and the Santa Clara Valley

The fertile Santa Clara Valley--once called the Valley of Heart's Delight and later Silicon Valley--has long been home to a substantial Chinese population. Like other immigrants, they arrived seeking opportunity and armed with survival instincts and the ability to persevere, but the struggles they faced were unique. From 1866 to 1931, five distinct Chinatowns existed in San Jose, each one devastated by mysterious fires or stifled by unjust laws. Early Chinese in the region labored relentlessly, building railroads and levees and toiling as laundrymen, grocers, cooks, servants, field hands, and factory workers. In the 20th century, new industries replaced agriculture, and an influx of Chinese invigorated the valley with innovative ideas, helping it emerge as a leader in technology.
