A Critical Theory of Economic Compulsion
This book explores a variety of interconnected themes central to contemporary Marxist theory and its further development as a critical social theory. Championing the critique of political economy as a critical theory of society and rejecting Marxian economics as a contradiction in terms, it argues instead that economic categories are perverted social categories, before identifying the sheer unrest of life - the struggle to make ends meet - as the negative content of the reified system of economic objectivity. With class struggle recognised as the negative category of the cold society of capitalist wealth, which sees in humanity a living resource for economic progress, the author contends that the critique of class society finds its rational solution in the society of human purposes, that is, the classless society of communist individuals. A theoretically sophisticated engagement with Marxist thought, A Critical Theory of Economic Compulsion will appeal to scholars of social and political theory with interests in critical theory and post-capitalist imaginaries.
Subjectivation and Cohesion
On the basis of a reconstruction of legal theory in the tradition of Marx – a current that has been more or less silenced since the end of the 1970s – Subjectivation and Cohesion develops a critical counter-pole to the theories of law that predominate in social theory today. To this end, the works of Franz Neumann, Otto Kirchheimer, Evgeny Pashukanis, Oskar Negt, Isaac D. Balbus, the so-called 'State-derivation School', Antonio Gramsci, Nicos Poulantzas and Michel Foucault are first analysed for their strengths and weaknesses, and then combined to form a new construction: a materialist legal theory that is up to date and can avoid the shortcomings of existing theories – above all their disregard for gender relations and the reductive consequences of functionalist, economic or politicist approaches to law. Computers have changed typography and prepress as well as printing. Typefaces are manufactured by "digital punch cutters" with a PC, not any more by punch cutters. Typefaces are constructed an output by a new technolgy, the so-called fonttechnology. The book by Peter Karow covers the whole area of it. It offers various chapters about (among others) issues like intelligent font scaling, kerning, quality of type, legibility, and problems of different output devices. It is interesting to read about Gutenberg setting, the font market, optical scaling, and last but not least a "hand on" Kanjhi, the Chinese/Japanese Glyphs. Furthermore, Fonttechnology contains a number of valuable and instructive appendices. Almost everything one has to know about type and computers!
