Dearest Andrew

In 1951 Andrew Reiber, a resident of Maine, wrote to Vita Sackville-West, asking if a young friend of his might visit her garden in Kent, England, already famous though not then, as now, open to the public. This led to a correspondence that lasted until Vita's death in 1962. They never met. Vita lived for her writing and her garden and evidently felt secure in the fact that this friendship involved no confrontations. Her letters are relaxed and informal, first about gardening matters and later about more general news of family and other events. They make delightful reading, and it is no wonder that "dearest Andrew," as he soon became, cherished every one. At Andrew Reiber's request, Nancy MacKnight, a friend and professor at the University of Maine, has arranged the letters with a connecting narrative. It is a charming collection that should appeal to all of V. Sackville-West's admirers.

Harold Nicolson was a man of extraordinary gifts. A renowned politician, historian, biographer, diarist, novelist, lecturer, journalist, broadcaster and gardener, his position in society and politics allowed him an insight into the most dramatic events of British, indeed world, history. Nicolson's personal life was no less dramatic. Married to Vita Sackville-West, one of the most famous writers of her day, their marriage survived, even prospered, despite their both being practising homosexuals. Unashamedly elitist, bound together by their literary, social, and intellectual pursuits, moving in the refined circles of the Bloomsbury group they viewed life from the rarified peaks of aristocratic haughtiness. Few men could boast such gifts as Nicolson possessed, yet he ended his life plagued by self-doubt. 'I am attempting nothing; therefore I cannot fail,' he once acknowledged. What went wrong? It was a question that haunted Nicolson throughout his adult life. Relying on a wealth of archival material, Norman Rose brilliantly disentangles fact from fiction, setting Nicolson's story of perceived failure against the wider perspective of his times.

Kittery to Bar Harbor

Maine's more than 3,000 miles of rocky coastline, picturesque islands, sandy beaches, iconic lighthouses, and quintessential New England harbors have lured visitors since the middle of the 19th century. Steamships first transported sportsmen and "rusticators" along the coast. Soon summer colonies formed, and art schools flourished. Expanding train travel led to the development of seaside resorts with grand hotels, while America's wealthiest families built opulent summer "cottages" in exclusive enclaves. Yachts became common sights along the coast and cruising grew in popularity. With the 20th century came the automobile and the development of the highway system, including Route 1, which encouraged road trips. The history of touring the Maine coast between 1860 and 1960 offers fascinating insight into the history of Maine, tourism, and America itself.
