During the 17th century, a strong community of New Christians was established in Rio de Janeiro. They had fled from the northern part of Brazil to escape from the Portuguese Inquisition. However, in the first half of the 18th century, the Inquisition in Rio de Janeiro arrested 320 New Christians, among them 167 women, who were all sent to Lisbon. They were tried for heresy and for having observed Jewish practices in secret. Most of them were sentenced to prison, their property was expropriated, and they were required to carry out penitentiary acts for the rest of their lives. Describes the social and cultural background of New Christian women in Rio de Janeiro and the procedures of the Inquisition. Concludes that these women were victims of the totalitarian, racist, and antisemitic ideology and policy of the Church. Notes that in the eyes of the Inquisition a Jew was always a Jew, suspected of heresy even after reconciliation. Pp. 423-457 present a list of names of the 167 women, with biographical information.
