Focusing on the importance of functional foods and their secondary metabolites for human health, this volume presents new insights with scientific evidence on the use of functional foods in the treatment of certain diseases. The plants covered and their bioactive compounds are easily accessible and are believed to be effective with fewer side effects in comparison with modern drugs in the treatment of different diseases. The plants contain chemical compounds that can modify and modulate biological systems, eliciting therapeutic effects. Some plants and derived products mentioned include black carrot, olive oil, citrus peel, grapes, candy leaf, cereals and grains, and green and black tea. The...
Ellagic acid is a powerful bioactive polyphenolic compound showing a wide range of biological activities and potential beneficial effects on human health. In this book, Chapter One offers an overview of the main food sources of ellagic acid, its glycosides and ellagitannins. Chapter Two studies two Brazilian fruits rich in ellagic acid: the Camu-camu (M. dubia) and the Jaboticaba (M.cauliflora). Chapter Three also presents a collection of the main sources of ellagic acid, as well as structural and safety features related to its applications on diet. Chapter Four shows the effect of ellagic acid on mitochondrial related diseases with an emphasis on its mitochondrial targeting which contribute to these pathological conditions.
This reference work provides comprehensive information about the bioactive molecules presented in our daily food and their effect on the physical and mental state of our body. Although the concept of functional food is new, the consumption of selected food to attain a specific effect existed already in ancient civilizations, namely of China and India. Consumers are now more attentive to food quality, safety and health benefits, and the food industry is led to develop processed- and packaged-food, particularly in terms of calories, quality, nutritional value and bioactive molecules. This book covers the entire range of bioactive molecules presented in daily food, such as carbohydrates, protei...
This book focuses on the current and potential applications of microalgae and cyanobacteria in pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and cosmeceuticals. The book deals with the very recent and advanced techniques and technologies in algal cultivation and extraction for its application. The chapters discuss the biological importance, properties, and uses of algal metabolites and microalgae-based compounds in drug development, in food nutrition enhancement, and in the development of cosmetics with medicinal properties. The chapter authors cover a range of diverse topics on algal biological resources, such as: algae as a nutraceutical and functional food ingredient the extraction of food bioactive c...

Bioactive Food Components Activity in Mechanistic Approach presents the role of functional foods and bioactive compounds in inflammation. This book focuses on bioactive compounds, including phenolics, prebiotics, carotenoids, tocopherols, bioactive peptides, probiotics, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, and describes their actions in several diseases, mainly obesity and co-morbidities, inflammatory bowel disease, cognitive decline and cancer, and aging. Intended for food, nutrition, and nutraceutical researchers, as well as those studying related fields, the book offers a mechanistic approach that is currently lacking in the market. - Explores the mechanistic approach of functional foods in health and disease - Contains definitions, case studies, applications, literature reviews, recent developments and text boxes - Provides coverage of phenolic compounds, prebiotics and probiotics, carotenoids, tocopherols, bioactive peptides, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, and sulfur compounds
Plant-Based Functional Foods and Phytochemicals: From Traditional Knowledge to Present Innovation covers the importance of the therapeutic health benefits of phytochemicals derived from plants. It discusses the isolation of potential bioactive molecules from plant sources along with their value to human health. It focuses on physical characteristics, uniqueness, uses, distribution, traditional and nutritional importance, bioactivities, and future trends of different plant-based foods and food products. Functional foods, beyond providing basic nutrition, may offer a potentially positive effect on health and cures for various disease conditions, such as metabolic disorders (including diabetes)...
