Early Days of X-ray Crystallography

2012 marked the centenary of one of the most significant discoveries of the early twentieth century, the discovery of X-ray diffraction (March 1912, by Laue, Friedrich, and Knipping) and of Bragg's law (November 1912). The discovery of X-ray diffraction confirmed the wave nature of X-rays and the space-lattice hypothesis. It had two major consequences: the analysis of the structure of atoms, and the determination of the atomic structure of materials. This had a momentous impact in chemistry, physics, mineralogy, material science, and biology. This book relates the discovery itself, the early days of X-ray crystallography, and the way the news of the discovery spread round the world. It expla...

Pierre-Gilles de Gennes

Pierre-Gilles de Gennes

Best known outside the scientific community for the Nobel Prize in Physics he won in 1991, Pierre-Gilles de Gennes was exceptional amongst scientists for the breadth and depth of his contributions in multiple fields of physics. He was also much ahead of his time in his desire to break down barriers between scientific disciplines and between fundamental and applied science. He was equally unusual in his willingness to explain the nature and purpose of his work to society at large and to young people in particular. Laurence Pl(r)vert''s fascinating work retraces the influences and experiences that moulded this complex, charismatic, charming and eclectic genius. It follows him from his unconven...

X-Ray and Neutron Dynamical Diffraction

This volume collects the proceedings of the 23rd International Course of Crystallography, entitled "X-ray and Neutron Dynamical Diffraction, Theory and Applications," which took place in the fascinating setting of Erice in Sicily, Italy. It was run as a NATO Advanced Studies Institute with A. Authier (France) and S. Lagomarsino (Italy) as codirectors, and L. Riva di Sanseverino and P. Spadon (Italy) as local organizers, R. Colella (USA) and B. K. Tanner (UK) being the two other members of the organizing committee. It was attended by about one hundred participants from twenty four different countries. Two basic theories may be used to describe the diffraction of radiation by crystalline matte...

Applied Crystallography - Proceedings Of The Xvii International Conference

The need to investigate functional differential equations with discontinuous delays is addressed in this book. Recording the work and findings of several scientists on differential equations with piecewise continuous arguments over the last few years, this book serves as a useful source of reference. Great interest is placed on discussing the stability, oscillation and periodic properties of the solutions. Considerable attention is also given to the study of initial and boundary-value problems for partial differential equations of mathematical physics with discontinuous time delays. In fact, a large part of the book is devoted to the exploration of differential and functional differential equations in spaces of generalized functions (distributions) and contains a wealth of new information in this area. Each topic discussed appears to provide ample opportunity for extending the known results. A list of new research topics and open problems is also included as an update.

Sonar to Quartz Clock

Sonar to Quartz Clock examines how the unapplied phenomenon of piezoelectricity became applied for technologies such as sonar, crystal frequency control, the quartz clock, and how its research has consequently changed during WWI and the interwar period. It aims at reconstructing, for the first time, the fascinating history of the inventions and the development of these highly important technologies, which are still in extensive use, and which were crucial for the electronic revolution, arguably the most important technological developments of the twentieth century. On this basis, this book suggests a better and more nuanced understanding of the relationships between modern science and techno...

The Man in the Monkeynut Coat

This title tells the story of the English physicist and molecular biologist William T. Astbury and how his work forms a previously untold chapter in the story of the discovery of the structure of DNA.

Wave Optical Simulations of X-ray Nano-focusing Optics

Curved x-ray multilayer mirrors focus synchrotron beams down to tens of nano metres. A wave-optical theory describing propagation of two waves in an elliptically curved focusing multilayer mirror is developed in this thesis. Using numerical integration, the layer shapes can be optimised for reflectivity and aberrations. Within this framework, performance of both existing and currently upgraded synchrotron beamlines is simulated. Using a more theoretical model case, limits of the theory are studied. A significant part of this work is dedicated to partial spatial coherence, modelled using the method of stochastic superpositions. Coherence propagation and filtering by x-ray waveguides is shown ...
