Canadian Health Policy in the News: Why Evidence Matters
Canadian Health Policy in the News is a compendium of the commentaries (or OpEds) published by Evidence Network in major newspapers across the country from April 2011 up to October 2012. It is a timely, balanced and non-partisan snapshot of what’s new and controversial concerning our healthcare system and related social programs that affect health and well-being in our country — with evidence at the forefront. This book is available free-of-charge so that you can share it widely, in your classrooms, amongst your friends and colleagues, on your websites and via social media. Canadian health policy will always be emerging and unfolding, responding to changing environmental and economic factors, new technologies, publicly held values and differing political landscapes. Canadian Health Policy in the News captures a moment in time and presents the issues that concern Canadians most, grounding our national discourse and debate on healthcare in the best evidence. Current Priorities in Health Research Agendas: Tensions Between Public and Commercial Interests in Prioritizing Biomedical, Social, and Environmental Aspects of Health
Predominant health research agendas, usually in line with existing financial incentives for obtaining lucrative research results, tend to focus on therapeutic and pharmacological intervention, prioritizing innovative therapies based on molecular biology and biotechnology approaches. However, commercial interests do not necessarily agree with existing public health priorities. The prevalence of health and biomedical research agendas often neglect not only the less lucrative diseases but also the study of the social and environmental determinants of health and disease, even when addressing these aspects could significantly improve population health at much lower costs. Some examples of absent studies in the health research agendas are the analysis of non-medical factors influencing health outcomes (social determinants of health), the analysis of the relationship between people and their environment (environmental health), or the evaluation of the socio-environmental factors that influence the deterioration of bodies and territories (such as the One Health approach).

Combatting Homophobia
Discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity concerns everybody, but it is foremost lesbian and gay persons who have to deal with it, especially when confronting the discovery of their homosexuality as a child or adolescent. In this book, education practitioners working with youth and researchers - from social, political, and educational sciences, as well as theology and philosophy - raise awareness of the wide spectrum of homophobia and offer solutions to the suffering it engenders in youths.
