Robert Campbell Henderson's discovery in 2018 of a series of twenty-seven engraved copper plates, abandoned in a scrap metal yard in Sarlat-la-Canéda, is an occult event of note, a spark leaping between eras. On finding the plates, Henderson saw they were signed by a local artist Serge Arnoux (1933-2014) and recognised their texts as translations of William Blake's 'Proverbs of Hell', from The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1793). First published on the travellerintheevening.com website, in Serge Arnoux's Mirror of Blake, Andy Wilson tells the story of the discovery of the Arnoux-Blake plates, of Arnoux's various surrealistic works, the connections between Blake's sexual imagery and surrealism, and the roots of Blake's pietistic eroticism in the Moravianism of his mother. The Blake we see emerging is neither the done-dry Neoplatonist nor an early proponent of 'mindfulness' and a balanced lifestyle and moderation in all things, as imagined by recent commentators, but rather Blake the occult, revolutionary surrealist.

"Starting with the commodity form (rather than the 'spirit' lauded by everyone from Classic FM retards to NME journalists), Adorno outlined a revolutionary musicology, a passageway between subjective feeling and objective conditions. In Adorno for Revolutionaries, Ben Watson argues that this is what everyone's been looking for since the PCF blackened the name of Marxism by wrecking the hopes of May '68. Batting aside postmodern airheads and prattling pundits alike, this collection detonates the explosive core of Adorno's thought. The Association of Musical Marxists says: Those 'socialists' who are frightened of their feelings can go stew in their imaginary bookshop. For us, great music is a necessity. To talk about it is to criticize everything that exists"--P. [4] of cover.

There has never been a book about Blake's last period, from his meeting with John Linnell in 1818 to his death in 1827, although it includes some of his greatest works. In The Traveller in the Evening, Morton Paley argues that this late phase involves attitudes, themes, and ideas that are either distinctively new or different in emphasis from what preceded them. After an introduction on Blake and his milieu during this period, Paley begins with a chapter on Blake's illustrations to Thornton's edition of Virgil. Paley relates these to Blake's complex view of pastoral, before proceeding to a history of the project, its near-abortion, and its fulfillment as one of Blake's greatest accomplishmen...

Making Software

Many claims are made about how certain tools, technologies, and practices improve software development. But which claims are verifiable, and which are merely wishful thinking? In this book, leading thinkers such as Steve McConnell, Barry Boehm, and Barbara Kitchenham offer essays that uncover the truth and unmask myths commonly held among the software development community. Their insights may surprise you. Are some programmers really ten times more productive than others? Does writing tests first help you develop better code faster? Can code metrics predict the number of bugs in a piece of software? Do design patterns actually make better software? What effect does personality have on pair p...
