William Diamond and Anthony Baratta are in the business of invention. In twenty-eight years of collaboration, the New York City-based duo has created a design style without limits: one that defies predictability, embraces the extraordinary, and begs to be loved and lived in. Featuring stunning new photography from Michel Arnaud, All-American: The Exuberant Style of William Diamond and Anthony Baratta is a compendium of the designers' most recent, most ambitious, and most exciting projects. From a traditional Colonial house in Connecticut and a log cabin in Idaho that overlooks the Rockies, to the New York City apartments that define urbane living, the range and innovation of Diamond Baratta Design's work is presented in all its artistry and extravagance.

Studies of Mascarene Island Birds

Studies of Mascarene Island Birds

First published in 1987, this volume presents the scientific results of an expedition, promoted by the British Ornithologists' Union, to study the endangered birds of the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean. This group of islands is of unique importance to bird conservation and is perhaps best known as the last home of the famous dodo. Thirty endemic species of birds are already extinct and the populations of several others are now so small as to be of doubtful validity. The data presented here will enable the appropriate government departments and conservation bodies to proceed on the basis of a sound knowledge of the needs of the threatened birds, and it is hoped that the survival of at least a proportion of the unique wildlife of this island group can be ensured. Studies of Mascarene Island Birds will also provide the keen amateur ornithologist with a serious interest in conservation with a direct appreciation of field work aimed at protecting rate species in their natural habitat.

The Value of Birds

Wildlife tourism is an increasingly important source of foreign exchange for developing countries, while in the industrial world revenues from birdwatching run into hundreds of millions. Birds are hunted for recreation and subsistence, their eggs harvested, their feathers used in traditional ceremonies. Birds are also recognised as one of the most important indicators of the state of the environment. This book provides many examples of the value of birds as socio-economic resources and bio-indicators, while never losing sight of their intrinsic value. Crammed with bracing counter-arguments to those who see conservation as indifferent or hostile to human interests.
