Knowledge for Justice

With the adoption of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement, the purpose of development is being redefined in both social and environmental terms. Despite pushback from conservative forces, change is accelerating in many sectors. To drive this transformation in ways that bring about social, environmental and economic justice at a local, national, regional and global levels, new knowledge and strong cross-regional networks capable of foregrounding different realities, needs and agendas will be essential. In fact, the power of knowledge matters today in ways that humanity has probably never experienced before, placing an emphasis on the roles of researc...

This book, which is the PhD thesis of the author presented to the Faculty of Forestry of the University of Joensuu (Finland) in December 2001, analyses changes in the forest cover in the Ohangwena Region, particularly focussing on the domestic use of wood in constructions on farms. 'The results indicate that deforestation was caused almost entirely by clearing of land for permanent agriculture. ... The frequent change of homestead site has been an important factor in creating the characteristic agroforestry landscape' of the area. One of the sources the authors uses are aerial photographs from the 1940s onwards, and satellite images from the 1980s onwards. The discussion in the book deals with household sizes, homestead density and constructions, land cover structures and frequency of vegetation species. (BAB).

Encountering the Past in Nature

Annotation. Six essays by Finnish scholars (which accounts for some of the notes being in Finnish) discuss the "new" science of environmental history, issues and case studies of change over time in forested Northern Hemisphere zones due to natural and human forces, and Western conceptions of wilderness. Eurasian Environments

Through a series of essays, Eurasian Environments prompts us to rethink our understanding of tsarist and Soviet history by placing the human experience within the larger environmental context of flora, fauna, geology, and climate. This book is a broad look at the environmental history of Eurasia, specifically examining steppe environments, hydraulic engineering, soil and forestry, water pollution, fishing, and the interaction of the environment and disease vectors. Throughout, the authors place the history of Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union in a trans-chronological, comparative context, seamlessly linking the local and the global. The chapters are rooted in the ecological and geological specificities of place and community while unveiling the broad patterns of human-nature relationships across the planet. Eurasian Environments brings together an international group scholars working on issues of tsarist/Soviet environmental history in an effort to showcase the wave of fascinating and field-changing research currently being written.
