Brickwork for Apprentices has been the established reference on brickwork for generations of bricklayers. Continuously in print since 1944, John Hodge’s classic text has now been fully revised in its fifth edition by Malcolm Thorpe – who acted as a CITB Advisor and was involved in the draughting of the Intermediate Construction Award syllabus (bricklaying route) – to cover the brickwork craft-related units of the latest Construction Awards and related Trowel Occupations NVQs from CITB / City & Guilds at Levels 2 and 3. The fifth edition incorporates extended coverage on the relatively new area of thin joint systems, to match the latest industry-based requirements and technical developm...

The New Apprenticeships

Are you involved in assessing the new apprenticeships? Are you clear about your role and responsibilities in the context of the new apprenticeships? Do you need support in being an effective learning facilitator? One of the key features of the new standards-based apprenticeships is the role of learning mentors and coaches and the need to support apprentices throughout their journey and prepare them for end-point assessment. This book takes you through the essentials of learning and development, and the principles and practice of mentoring, coaching and assessing learning. Whatever your vocational subject, this accessible and concise text provides you with an in-depth understanding of these areas and how to effectively apply them to practice.

Adult apprenticeships

The Apprenticeship Programme expanded by 140 per cent between the 2006/07 and 2010/11 academic years. Apprentices aged over 25 account for 68 per cent of this increase. Most of the increase in the programme has been in just 10 apprenticeship occupations. Apprentices and inspectors are generally positive about the quality of apprenticeships, with 91 per cent of apprentices satisfied with their training; but the rapid expansion of the programme brings risks that need to be managed. One concern is that in 2010/11, 19 per cent (34,600) of apprenticeships lasted less than six months, when most are expected to last at least a year. Advanced apprenticeships yield higher returns than intermediate ap...

This is Volume I of eighteen in a series on the Sociology of Work and Organisation. First published in 1960, this is a study following the appointment Carr Committee, in 1956, of the and in the interest aroused by the Committee's Report Training for Skill-Recruitment and Training of young Workers in Industry (1958). The Carr Report and the discussion centred on it not only show the importance of the subject but also indicate the need for independent and detailed research in this field. Because certain features of apprenticeship are changing continuously and rapidly, it is inevitable that in a study of this kind some of the facts should be out of date by the time of publication.

'One of the very great writers of the last century' Guardian 'Lispector had an ability to write as though no one had ever written before' Colm Tóibín 'He'd wait for her, she knew that now. Until she learned' Lóri yearns for love yet is scared of herself, and of connecting with another human. When she meets Ulisses, a Professor of Philosophy, she is forced to confront her fears. As both of them will learn, to be worthy of another person, they must first be fully themselves. The book of which Clarice Lispector said, 'I humanized myself', An Apprenticeship is about the ultimate unknowability of the other in a relationship, and what it means to love and be loved.
