How architecture and urbanism can help to care for and repair a broken planet: essays and illustrated case studies. Today, architecture and urbanism are capital-centric, speculation-driven, and investment-dominated. Many cannot afford housing. Austerity measures have taken a disastrous toll on public infrastructures. The climate crisis has rendered the planet vulnerable, even uninhabitable. This book offers an alternative vision in architecture and urbanism that focuses on caring for a broken planet. Rooted in a radical care perspective that always starts from the given, in the midst of things, this edited collection of essays and illustrated case studies documents ideas and practices from a...

Architecture in Vienna

The book-map Architecture in Vienna offers a representative overview of the architectural quality of historical and contemporary building in the city. The locations of the selected objects are indicated on fifteen fold-out extracts from the city map. Precise addresses make the objects easier to find. 345 illustrations and explanatory texts document a total of 350 key buildings from all epochs. Additional general maps give information on the public transport network, the most important main- and through-roads, on protected areas, pedestrian areas and public green spaces and on the development of public housing. This book is an indispensable guide to architecture in Vienna.

Dominique Perrault Architecture

Dominique Perrault Architecture

Dominique Perrault, the force behind the four colossal projects showcased here, defines a meta-building as "a structure that exceeds the customary dimensions of a building to encompass a landscape or a city, both physically and conceptually." She continues, "I believe the future of our towns lies in meta-buildings, for reasons of energy consumption, social relations, transportation and urbanity. Buildings of this type almost act in an urban manner. In a sense they're a kind of city in themselves." That thesis might be controversial, but it's hard to debate the power of Perrault's projects, the prismatically-shaped Marinsky II Theater, on a canal in historic St. Petersburg, the winged Olympic Tennis Stadium in Madrid, the high-rise Donnau-City Gate in Vienna, and the lawn-covered Ewha Women's University Campus Center in Seoul. Perrault, who has won the World Architecture Award and the Mies van der Rohe Award, is best known for Paris's Bibliotheque Nationale.

Lessons from Bernard Rudofsky

What we need is not a new way of building but a new way of living'so the subtitle of one of Rudofsky?'s last works. Setting out from the assumption that the design of every single room in a house is based on a physical function: one place to lie the body down to rest, another to take in food, a third to step into a tub to bath, Bernard Rudofsky (1905-88) believed architecture served to stimulate the senses and refine everyday culture. His conception of architecture and design is more topical today than ever. Internationally renowned in his day for the exhibitions he created for MoMA in the 1940s and 1950s, today he is remembered above all for his sharp-tongued, witty writings, which still speak to a broad audience. "Lessons from Bernard Rudofsky" is more than a collection of essays by experts and introduction to the complex concept of architecture and living of a cosmopolitan and unconventional thinker; the rich visual material conveys his philosophy: "I believe that sensory pleasure should take precedence over intellectual pleasure in art and architecture."
