The five previous volumes of the Acta Historiae Neerlandicae appeared under the auspices of the Netherlands Committee for Historical Sciences. When in 1970 this Committee merged with the Historical Society to form the Dutch Historical Society (Nederlands Historisch Genootschap) an opportunity arose to rethink the aims of the Acta's original promotors. Journey from the Three Bridges
Pieter De Jong, Sr. was born 19 March 1808 in Arkel, The Netherlands. His parents were Jan De Jong and Maria Kooij. He married Gijsbertje Van Houwelingen (1810-1876) 1 May 1831. They had twelve children. They emigrated in 1866 with seven of their children and settled in Pella, Iowa. Pieter died in 1890. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas.
Tidal Flat Estuaries
In view of the increasing problems of waste disposal in the Netherlands, plans were made to pipeline the waste to the Ems-Dollard estuary. To evaluate the practicability a project was started with the aim to implement a simulation model of an estuary ecosystem. This model was based on the knowledge of the hydrology, geochemistry and biology of the Ems estuary. For this approach data of the abiotic and biotic environment were collected in studies of the Ems estuary and are presented in this report. With its comprehensive information of biological processes as food webs, biomass production and nutrient supply, as well as of sedimentological and flux parameters, this book can be considered as a general model of an estuary ecosystem.
