Literature and Film

Literature and film both carry forward narratives but the manner in which they do so are markedly different. If one were to use a metaphor from science one could say that in interpreting literature there is one degree of freedom more in that one is first translating the words into sensual data and then into meaning, whereas in cinema, the translation into imagery has already been done. When Grigori Kozintsev translates Shakespeare’s King Lear into the language of cinema, it is like the ‘word made flesh’. When the word has been made flesh, an idea has been given concrete shape and one could say that an idea at it source is superior as an artefact to be used or something to be consumed t...

Internal Flight

Sonali’s poems elucidate the message and the beauty of nature. The themes of the poems encompass several levels of experiences arising from her personal encounters and her quest to know the unknown. The poet has endeavoured to give poetic expression to her feelings of the meaninglessness of the materialistic life. She thinks that if a person believes that the human body is the “self”, he or she develops only materialistic outlook in life. His or her aim is to achieve success in material pursuits by any means, whatsoever, and focuses more on mundane objects. In Sonali’s poems , one can see the amalgamation of wisdom, poetic insight and spirituality intertwined with one another

The Fluid Frame in Cinema

The Fluid Frame in Cinema

This book is a passionate rendezvous with cinema, the most collaborative of art forms. The essays here explore the possibilities offered by a close reading of cinema that keeps cultural contexts and their socio-historical roots firmly in sight. This collection does not consider the “frame”, that oft-referenced basic unit of vision in films, as a limiting structure. Rather, it brings into purview what is left out. Divided into three sections, the essays look firstly at Indian cinema, both Bollywood and regional films, tracing the journey of Indian cinema from the periphery to the center. The second section focuses on Adaptation Studies and takes an unorthodox look at classic adaptations of literature. The final section is a reappraisal of directors like Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick. The essays propose that, even though the film as an artwork does not change fundamentally over time, it still strikes a contemporary critical gaze differently.
