Chicago by the Book

Despite its rough-and-tumble image, Chicago has long been identified as a city where books take center stage. In fact, a volume by A. J. Liebling gave the Second City its nickname. Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle arose from the midwestern capital’s most infamous industry. The great Chicago Fire led to the founding of the Chicago Public Library. The city has fostered writers such as Nelson Algren, Saul Bellow, and Gwendolyn Brooks. Chicago’s literary magazines The Little Review and Poetry introduced the world to Eliot, Hemingway, Joyce, and Pound. The city’s robust commercial printing industry supported a flourishing culture of the book. With this beautifully produced collection, Chicagoâ...

John Baldessari

By combining and colliding the unexpected, the US artist John Baldessari (1931-2020), created conceptual works that raise questions regarding what art is, how art is made, and what art can look like. After concluding in the 1960s that a photographic image or a text were more adequate expressions of his artistic intentions than painting, John Baldessari's practice took a new direction. Since then, Baldessari has combined subjects from the imagery of popular culture with linguistic examinations, creating works that challenge artistic norms and boundaries. Besides the two essays the book also includes a wide selection of Baldessari's own writings from 1968-2011.

Travel

Three men board a train and walk through it until they find seats, then ride through changing scenery until they reach their destination, a waterfront. The point of the book is Yokoyama's outlandish, hyperstylized designs for characters, architecture and landscapes. Everything and everyone is abstracted until nothing is left but a few identifying features; some sequences, as when the train passes through a rain shower, are almost pure pattern--Publisher's Weekly.

Each chapter includes essays written by librarians in the field that deal with the unique environment of art museum libraries, from the largest research collections that serve many curatorial departments and multiple administrative layers to the smallest solo-librarian settings where staff work in relative isolation."--Jacket.

The New Art Museum Library

The New Art Museum Library addresses the issues facing today's art museum libraries through a series of scholarly essays written by top librarians in the field. In 2007, the publication, Art Museum Libraries and Librarianship, edited by Joan Benedetti, was the first to solely focus on the field of art museum librarianship. In the decade since then, many changes have occurred in the field--both technological and ideological--prompting the need for a follow-up publication. In addition to representing current thinking and practice, this new publication also addresses the need to clearly articulate and define the art museum library’s value within its institution. It documents the broad changes...
