Innate Immune Cell Determinants of T Cell Immunity: From Basic Mechanisms to Clinical Implications

Long-lasting T cell immunity is delivered by an array of individual T lymphocytes expressing clonally distributed and highly specific antigen receptors recognizing an almost infinite number of antigens that might enter in contact with the host. Following antigen-specific priming in lymphnodes, naïve CD4 and CD8 T lymphocytes proliferate generating clones of effector cells that migrate to peripheral tissues and deliver unique antigen-specific effector functions. Moreover, a proportion of these effector lymphocytes survive as memory T cells that can be rapidly mobilized upon new exposure to the same antigen, even years after their primary induction. Innate immune cells play crucial roles in t...

This book reviews the role of each cell subset in the skin, providing the basics for understanding skin immunology and the mechanisms of skin diseases. The skin is one of the immune organs and is continually exposed to foreign antigens and external stimuli that must be monitored and characterized for possible elimination. Upon exposure to foreign antigens, the skin can elicit a variety of immune responses in harmony with skin components that include keratinocytes, dendritic cell subsets, mast cells, basophils, fibroblasts, macrophages, gamma-delta T cells, neutrophils, myeloid-derived suppressor cells, vascular and lymphatic cells, hair follicles, platelets, and adipose tissues, among others...

This book explores novel aspects of social robotics, spoken dialogue systems, human-robot interaction, spoken language understanding, multimodal communication, and system evaluation. It offers a variety of perspectives on and solutions to the most important questions about advanced techniques for social robots and chat systems. Chapters by leading researchers address key research and development topics in the field of spoken dialogue systems, focusing in particular on three special themes: dialogue state tracking, evaluation of human-robot dialogue in social robotics, and socio-cognitive language processing. The book offers a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners in both academia and industry whose work involves advanced interaction technology and who are seeking an up-to-date overview of the key topics. It also provides supplementary educational material for courses on state-of-the-art dialogue system technologies, social robotics, and related research fields.

Frontiers in Oncology World Cancer Day 2019 Special Edition

Advances in cancer research over the recent decades have been plentiful and often successful, with 5 year survival rates increasing almost uniformly across the board. The advent of new technologies has presented solutions for yesterday’s barriers to research, allowing us to leap forward in our ability to prevent, diagnose, and treat various cancers. Developments in omics studies has provided new insights into the underlying molecular basis of different cancers and their subtypes, greatly enhancing our understanding of the vast heterogeneity that exists. Progress in our ability to diagnose and detect early-stage cancers has resulted in numerous screening and prevention programs. Novel imagi...

Targeted Immunological Therapies in Dermatology

Targeted Immunological Therapies in Dermatology

Cutaneous inflammation, particularly for chronic inflammatory diseases such as eczema and psoriasis are traditionally treated with corticosteroids to control ongoing inflammation. However, prolonged usage of steroids can lead to various side-effects such as thinning of skin, stretch marks or easy bruising. Prolonged suppression of the immune system may also result in secondary infections, driving more inflammation. Next-generation targeted immunological therapies can thus provide an alternative way for us to treat cutaneous inflammation in a more precise manner; these therapies are often wide-ranging in nature, encompassing biologics, small-molecule inhibitors or RNA therapeutics. Through th...
