People and Forest — Policy and Local Reality in Southeast Asia, the Russian Far East, and Japan

leading to an overall decrease in the world's forest cover. The forests of Asia, in particular, have been strongly impacted. A number of initiatives have suggested forest policy reforms, and the need for the sustainable management of forests has been widely recognized and encouraged. But because implementation of reforms at the local level has been insufficient, it is imperative that local people begin to effectively participate in forest planning and management as well as in protected-area management. The Forest Conservation Project, launched in April 1998 by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), has carried out research activities on forest strategies, including policy analysis and on-site surveys. This book gives an overview of the project's research activities in its first three-year phase (April1998-March 2001). Since viable forest strategies work best when based on the involvement of local people, this report is addressed to stakeholders in the communities of the relevant countries, including local people and authorities, community-based organizations, experts, national agencies, and international institutions.

Risk Analysis in Forest Management

Risk Analysis in Forest Management

Due to the long-term planning horizons and the great variety of natural, economic, and operational hazards affecting forest ecosystems, uncertainty and multiple risk are typical aspects of forest management. Applications of risk analysis are surprisingly rare, in spite of the rich assortment of sophisticated forest planning tools that are available today. The objective of this particular volume within the book series Managing Forest Ecosystems is to present state-of-the-art research results, concepts, and techniques regarding the assessment and evaluation of natural hazards and the analysis of risk and uncertainty relating to forest management. Various aspects of risk analysis are covered, including examples of specific modelling tools. The book is divided into three sections covering ecological perspectives, applications in engineering and planning, and methods applicable to economics and policy.

Recent advances in brain science measurement technology have given researchers access to very large-scale time series data such as EEG/MEG data (20 to 100 dimensional) and fMRI (140,000 dimensional) data. To analyze such massive data, efficient computational and statistical methods are required.Time Series Modeling of Neuroscience Data shows how to

"Sary Mom takes a deep and methodical look at the inner workings of Community Protected Areas in Cambodia. Through careful analysis of the local dynamics of the people living in the Toul Korki commune in the Peam Krasaop Wildlife Sanctuary, Sary Mom astutely assesses why some Community Protected Areas succeed while others fail to live up to their promises. Her insightful observations and recommendations offer hope that mangrove conservation can indeed coexist with secure and sustainable local livelihoods"--Page 4 of cover.

This title was first published in 2001. Using a case study from British Columbia, this book addresses the economies of institutions, institutional change and transactions costs and develops the theory of the New Institutional Economics in the context of forestry institutions. This approach to economic analysis of forestry investment problems will emphasize the understanding of the linkages between the biological as well as institutional attributes of forestry activities.
