The Terrors of Wonder

"Daniel Strasel’s THE TERRORS OF WONDER is perhaps one of the quirkiest books I’ve encountered in this year’s contest, and certainly one of the most original. A mere summary of the plot (someone is trying to steal a young heiress’s inheritance) doesn’t do justice to the book’s odd structure: it’s made up of narrative, graphs, charts, footnotes, and appendices. All of this helps to lend the book a sense of verisimilitude—we feel as though we’re reading a collection of documents about an actual event. Strasel calls the book a tragicomedy, and it in fact is: there’s a great deal of humor in the book, but it’s about rather a serious topic. Much of the writing is quite good,...

Envisioning the Word

In this one-volume resource kit, Jensen helps preachers use visual images creatively and responsibly. How, how much, when, what equipment, use of teams, relationship to exegesis, different varieties of images, sources--all the essential topics and concerns are addressed here. Jensen first discusses how vital, if controversial, image-making has always been in Christian tradition and then demonstrates how preaching with images is both profoundly traditional and necessary to contemporary proclamation. His work combines practical advice with religious reflection to enable preachers to help their congregations envision the Word anew. The accompanying CD-ROM contains not only the full text of the book and helpful study guide, but links to the most helpful Websites and Web-based sources of images.

New Proclamation Commentary on Feasts, Holy Days, and Other Celebrations

New Proclamation Commentary on Feasts, Holy Days, and Other Celebrations continues the tradition of excellent biblical commentary that users of the seasonal New Proclamation volumes have come to expect. This volume offers essential historical background about each of thirty-five so-called lesser feasts and places each day into the context of the church year. Quotes related to the festival day from prayers, liturgies, and other sources have been included to help enliven the sermon and enhance worship, along with other guidance for preaching. Commentary and recommended texts for ten national days and nonliturgical celebrations are also included.
