Susanne Kriemann - cold time

In her photographic projects, Susanne Kriemann takes a research-oriented approach: dealing with archival and forgotten documents in particular is a central aspect to her work. The found photo material then frequently serves as a starting point for her own images. Formal or thematic analogies generate multifaceted layers of association, which address the circumstances in which the historical images were produced, their preservation, as well as their link to the present day--and always also examine her own medium of photography. This publication was created as part of the solo exhibitions "Cold Time" at the Kunstverein Braunschweig and "Modelling (Construction School)" at Arnolfini in Bristol....

This publication accompanies Torbjørn Rødland's exhibition “Fifth Honeymoon,” produced as a collaboration between Bergen Kunsthall; Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm; and Helsinki's Museum of Contemporary Art, Kiasma; and featuring thirty new photographs and a new video work, his first in eleven years. Photographed exclusively on analog material, often in staged studio settings, Rødland's works hold a unique place in the treatment of images by artists today. His photographs have an almost uncomfortable ambiguity, fully aware as they are of the power of images and the slippery comfort of normative formats, while simultaneously showing a sincere desire for the emotions and the magic that ar...

Casco Issues XII - Generous Structures

  • Categories: Art

Casco Issues is a magazine published by Casco - Office for Art, Design and Theory, which explores recurring issues that emerge from Casco's program. The twelfth edition of Casco Issues, Generous Structures, is a playful enquiry into "playfulness" as a value in critical cultural practice. It positions alternative notions of playing against the grain of neoliberal ideologies of "lifelong learning" and "work as play." By taking the idea of playing and the metaphor of the game as a starting point, the publication addresses what might be called a "ludic turn"--the impact of the notion of play and gaming methods in various research fields and cultural work. Most prominent in the Internet industrie...

The early Frankfurt School and feminism can and should inform each other. This volume presents an original collection of scholarship bringing together scholars of the Frankfurt School and feminist scholars. Essays included in the volume explore ideas from the early Frankfurt School that were explicitly focused on sex, gender, and sexuality, and bring ideas from the early Frankfurt School into productive dialogue with historical and contemporary feminist theory. Ranging across philosophy, sociology, gender and sexuality studies, science studies, and cultural studies, the essays investigate heteropatriarchy, essentialism, identity, intersectional feminism, and liberation. Set against an alarmi...

Experiments in architectural education in the post–World War II era that challenged and transformed architectural discourse and practice. In the decades after World War II, new forms of learning transformed architectural education. These radical experiments sought to upend disciplinary foundations and conventional assumptions about the nature of architecture as much as they challenged modernist and colonial norms, decentered building, imagined new roles for the architect, and envisioned participatory forms of practice. Although many of the experimental programs were subsequently abandoned, terminated, or assimilated, they nevertheless helped shape and in some sense define architectural dis...

Spatial Turns

The phrase "spatial turns" signals the growing importance of space as an analytical as well as representational category for culture. The volume addresses such emerging modes of inquiry by bringing together, for the first time, essays that engage with spatial turns, spatiality, and the theoretical implications of both in the context of German culture, history, and theory. Migrating from fields like geography, urban studies, and architecture, the new centrality of space has transformed social-science fields as diverse as sociology, philosophy, and psychology. In cultural studies, productive analyses of space increasingly cut across the studies of literature, film, popular culture, and the vis...

Elisabeth Haarr

  • Categories: Art

A richly illustrated volume on the influential textile art of Elisabeth Haarr. For over fifty years Elisabeth Haarr has been one of the most significant artists in Norway. From her early experimentation with tapestry as modern visual art in the 1960s to political works with an activist message in the 1970s, and her later sculptural installations of rugs, banners, figures, and drapes, Haarr’s oeuvre has significantly contributed to the consideration of textiles as a material in contemporary art. Today, her work continues to address topics such as feminism, anti-fascism, and environmental protection, and is as relevant as it was forty years ago. Elisabeth Haarr accompanies a monographic pres...
