Histamine and Histamine Antagonists

Together with the two previous volumes of the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology on histamine and antihistamines the present publication yields a picture of a still rapidly developing field of research. New techniques and new experimental approaches have brought us new knowledge and deeper insight into the biomedical significance of histamine, even if many questions remain to be answered about the functional and medical implications of this old biogenic amine. The present volume covers the progress in histamine research during the past two decades. A significant chapter concerns techniques for histamine determination. As the result of a consensus meeting in Munich in December 1988, a pane...

The GTPase Superfamily

Using a multidisciplinary approach, it features contributions and discussions of the latest research from leading scientists working on all aspects of GTPase activity. Covers all known members of the important superfamily of enzymes--the GTPases. Considers numerous key cellular functions and how they are regulated by GTPases. Also describes various regulatory proteins that modulate GTPase activity.

Biomechanics of Active Movement and Deformation of Cells

Cytomechanics is the application of the classical principles of mechanics in cell biology. It is an applied science concerned with the description and evaluation of mechanical properties of cells and their organelles as well as of the forces exerted by them. Thus, this topic needs a truly interdisciplinary approach, and accordingly this volume gives an up-to-date account of the current research done on cell division, mitosis, cytokinesis, cell locomotion and cell deformation during normal development and the cytoskeletal role in cell shape. Biologists, biomechanicians, biophysicists, biochemists and biomathematicians here discuss the basic concepts of mechanics and thermodynamics, emphasizing their applicability to cell activities.

Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms of Inflammation

Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms of Inflammation: Signal Transduction in Inflammatory Cells, Part A is a collection of papers that discusses the mechanisms of the transduction of signals linking stimulated receptors and cellular function. This book describes the pathways of signal transduction involved in stimulating functions of inflammatory cells connected with host defense and development of inflammatory injury. One paper notes the potential of using fluorescence methodology in analyzing ligand-receptor interactions in living systems during the natural abundance of cell surface receptors. Another paper discusses the structure and function of GTP-binding proteins in neutrophil signal tran...

Fourteen years have elapsed since the appearance of the first volume and it is with great pleasure that the Editor is now able to present volume 17. During these fourteen years various fields of drug research have undergone important, partly revolutionary, changes. A number of these have already been dealt with, so that the series PROGRESS IN DRUG RESEARCH contains a comprehensive review of a substantial part of our current knowledge. The Editor is particularly grateful for the opportunity of transmitting to those connected with the devel opment of drugs the extensive knowledge of the Authors, who, without exception, are themselves actively engaged in research. Drug research is currently in a state of transformation: reconsideration in the light of the past and reorientation with a view to the future. To a large extent this is due to the tumultuous developments in the last 20 years, developments which are unparalleled in the history of medicine and the consequences of which cannot yet be completely evaluated. Unfortunately, however, the current situation is not devoid of its unpleasant and even tragic aspects, aspects which fall outside the research worker's sphere or influence.
