Imperial College Inaugural Lectures in Materials Science and Materials Engineering

This volume contains six important articles in materials science and materials engineering, based upon inaugural lectures given by professors at Imperial College, London. Each author deals with an area of work in which he has been involved over a period of years, and gives a personal account, partly historical, of the main features and importance of his subject. The topics covered include: the strength and deformation of metals, the brittle behaviour of ceramics, electrical materials, biomaterials, friction and lubrication, and modern engineering adhesives. Contents: Slippery Customers, Sticky Problems (B J Briscoe); Sticking Up for Adhesives (A J Kinloch); Magical Materials for Motionless Machines (D B Holt); Interfaces in Materials OCo If You Can''t Beat them, Join Them (A Atkinson); Brittleness OCo A Tough Problem (R D Rawlings); The Story of Bioglass: From Concept to Clinic (L L Hench). Readership: Scientists and engineers with a general interest in materials science and materials engineering."

Polymer Tribology

Polymer Tribology

This book deals with the new and now-expanding field of friction, wear, and other surface-related mechanical phenomena for polymers. Polymers have been used in various forms such as bulk, films, and composites in applications where their friction, wear resistance, and other surface-related properties have been effectively utilized. There are also many examples in which polymers have performed extremely well, such as in tyres, shoes, brakes, gears, bearings, small moving parts in electronics and MEMS, cosmetics/hair products, and artificial human joints. Around the world, much research is currently being undertaken to develop new polymers, in different forms, for further enhancing tribological performance and for finding novel applications. Keeping in view the importance of tribology of polymers for research and technology as well as the vast literature that is now available in research papers and review articles, this timely book brings together a wealth of research data for an understanding of the basic principles of the subject.

The central theme of this book, The Third Body Concept: Interpretation of Tribological Phenomena, was chosen to honour the work of Professor Maurice Godet. The aim of this and previous conferences in the series is to select a topic of current interest to tribologists in order to further advance knowledge in selected fields. Presented by leading scientists from 23 countries, these proceedings provide an up-to-date review of developments in this field..

This collection of fully peer-reviewed papers were presented at the 26th Leeds-Lyon Tribology Symposium which was held in Leeds, UK, 14-17 September, 1999. The Leeds-Lyon Symposia on Tribology were launched in 1974, and the large number of references to original work published in the Proceedings over many years confirms the quality of the published papers. It also indicates that the volumes have served their purpose and become a recognised feature of the tribological literature. This year's title is 'Thinning Films and Tribological Interfaces', and the papers cover practical applications of tribological solutions in a wide range of situations. The evolution of a full peer review process has been evident for a number of years. An important feature of the Leeds-Lyon Symposia is the presentation of current research findings. This remains an essential feature of the meetings, but for the 26th Symposium authors were invited to submit their papers for review a few weeks in advance of the Symposium. This provided an opportunity to discuss recommendations for modifications with the authors.

The 14th International Conference on Wear of Materials took place in Washington, DC, USA, 30 March - 3 April 2003. These proceedings contain over two-hundred peer reviewed papers containing the best research, technical developments and engineering case studies from around the world. Biomaterials and nano-tribology receive special attention in this collection reflecting the general trends in the field. Further highlights include a focus on the new generation of instrumentation to probe wear at increasingly small scales. Approximately ninety communications and case studies, a popular format for the academic community have also been included, enabling the inclusion of the most up-to-date research. Over 200 peer-reviewed papers including hot topics such as biomaterials and nano-tribology Keeping you up-to-date with the latest research from leading experts Includes communications and case studies

Mechanics of Coatings was chosen as the topic for the 16th Leeds-Lyon Symposium, as it was decided to be a timely opportunity to bring together experts of many disciplines connected with coatings to find ways of extending the industrial use of these coatings particularly in the field of tribology. The volume contains 51 papers divided into 20 sessions.

Focusing exclusively on postharvest vegetable studies, this book covers advances in biochemistry, plant physiology, and molecular physiology to maximize vegetable quality. The book reviews the principles of harvest and storage; factors affecting postharvest physiology, calcium nutrition and irrigation control; product quality changes during handling and storage; technologies to improve quality; spoilage factors and biocontrol methods; and storage characteristics of produce by category. It covers changes in sensory quality such as color, texture, and flavor after harvest and how biotechnology is being used to improve postharvest quality.
