Black Markets and Militants
Understanding the political and socio-economic factors which give rise to youth recruitment into militant organizations is central to grasping some of the most important issues that affect the contemporary Middle East and Africa. In this book, Khalid Mustafa Medani explains why youth are attracted to militant organizations, examining the specific role economic globalization plays in determining how and why militant activists emerge. Based on extensive fieldwork, Medani offers an in-depth analysis of the impact of globalization, neoliberal reforms and informal economic networks on the rise and evolution of moderate and militant Islamist movements. In an original contribution to the study of Islamist and ethnic politics, he shows the importance of understanding when and under what conditions religious rather than other forms of identity become politically salient. Palestine and the Great Feud
This volume analyzes the early period of the Arab-Israeli conflict (1897–1948), which encompasses the emergence of the Zionist movement and the end of the First World War. Zionism and Western colonialism continue to play a definitive role in shaping the fate of the Palestinian cause. The author argues that it is possible to understand the existence of such a relationship between Zionism and Western colonialism by looking at the unity of purpose of both approaches and the international circles in which Zionism has been supported from the very beginning. Zionism does not correspond to a natural course of national development, such as the origin, language, and cultural unity of a nation residing in lands where its ancestors lived but is an international idea that transcends territoriality. Similarly, Western colonialism, which aims to design an extra territorial framework, follows the same path as Zionism in this framework.
The Companion to Said Nursi Studies
Contemporary Islamic theology remains a neglected area in studies on Islam. This work is dedicated to the thought and ideas of Said Nursi (1876-1960), one of the most prominent Muslim theologians of the twentieth century. Nursi inspired a faith movement--the Nur community--that originated in Turkey. It continues to play a key role in the revival of Islam and now numbers several millions of followers worldwide. Salafism in the Maghreb
The Arab Maghreb-the long stretch of North Africa that expands from Libya to Mauritania-is a vitally important region that impacts the security and politics of Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, and the broader Middle East. As Middle East scholars Frederic Wehrey and Anouar Boukhars show in Salafism in the Maghreb, it is also home to the conservative, literalist interpretation of Islam known as Salafism, which has emerged as a major social and political force. We are delighted to introduce the proceedings of the 1st INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ISLAMIC CIVILIZATION (ICIC) 2020 bringing together researchers, academics, experts and professionals in examining selected theme on Islamic Perspective of Sustainable Development and The Role of Islamic Economics In Today's Global Finance. This event was held on 27 August 2020 virtually by Universitas Islam Sultan Agung in collaboration along with some Islamic universities in Indonesia and overseas. The papers published in this proceeding are from multidisciplinary researches related to economy, education, humanities, Islamic studies, laws, social sciences and health. Each contributed paper was refereed before being accepted for publication. The single-blind peer reviewed was used in the paper selection.
