Care & Gender – Potentials & Risks of Universal Basic Income (UBI)

The third annual FRIBIS conference in October 2023 centered its discussions on two previously underrepresented subjects in the Basic Income debate: care and gender. By focusing on these topics, the conference highlighted the importance of exploring basic income through an intersectional feminist lens, particularly addressing issues of care, the care economy, and the division of labor. The main conference was organized by the two international FRIBIS Teams: Care & Basic Income and Gender & Basic Income. Parallel sessions from other FRIBIS teams and members, as well as external researchers and advocates from multiple disciplines and fields of expertise, completed the program. A selection of th...

Financial Issues of a Universal Basic Income (UBI)

The first annual FRIBIS conference in October 2021 aimed to take into account the growing economic interest in financial issues in basic income research. After all, research on Unconditional Basic Income is significantly influenced by this development of monetary policy issues and, in turn, contributes just as influentially to the discussion. In addition to the economically focused main sessions, the two-day conference also included parallel sessions of other FRIBIS teams, in which prominent guests of the basic income discourse presented and discussed together with the interdisciplinary and international teams and members of FRIBIS. Bernhard Neumärker is Professor of Economic Policy and Director of the Götz Werner Professorship for Economic Policy and New Ordoliberalism at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg. In 2019, he founded the Freiburg Institute for Basic Income Studies (FRIBIS) for interfaculty and interdisciplinary research on Unconditional Basic Income in a network of six institutes of the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg.

The main conference was organized by the two international FRIBIS Teams: Water-Energy-Food Nexus and Foreign Aid Basic Income (WEF_FABI) together with Basic Income for Nature and Climate (BINC). Parallel sessions from other FRIBIS teams and members as well as external researchers and advocates from multiple disciplines and fields of expertise completed the progr...

F.A. von Hayeks konstitutioneller Liberalismus

English summary: F.A. von Hayek was one of the most prominent liberal theorists. His work on liberalism dealt with the limits of political planning, the constitution of a liberal state, the moral order and problems of methodology. The papers collected in this book provide a critical overview of these subjects and demonstrate that Hayek's political philosophy is still highly relevant today.

This book explores the intrinsically multiscale issue of renewable energy transition from a local, national and transnational perspective, and provides insights into current developments in the Upper Rhine Region that can serve as an international model. Organised around the exploration of stakeholder issues, the volume first describes a framework for public action and modelling and then articulates a triple complementary focus from the viewpoint of law, economics and sociology. This multidisciplinary approach is anchored in the social sciences, but also explores the ways in which technological issues are increasingly debated in the implementation of the ecological transition. With a focus o...

Sustainability Governance and Hierarchy provides a solid, theoretically and empirically grounded reflection on the concept of "sustainability governance". This idea has been growing in popularity in social science literature, as well as among decision-makers and governance actors, as it brings together two vast fields of study that have sometimes been dismissed as vague or ideologically loaded. In order to link the concepts of "sustainability" and "governance", the book is organized around the exploration of hierarchy issues, which often lie in the background of the existing literature but are not the focus of analysis. The chapters reflect ongoing controversies and dialogue between scientis...

Ordoliberalism, Law and the Rule of Economics

  • Categories: Law

Ordoliberalism is a theoretical and cultural tradition of significant societal and political impact in post-war Germany. For a long time the theory was only known outside Germany by a handful of experts, but ordoliberalism has now moved centre stage after the advent of the financial crisis, and has become widely perceived as the ideational source of Germany's crisis politics. In this collection, the contributors engage in a multi-faceted exploration of the conceptual history of ordoliberalism, the premises of its founding fathers in law and economics, its religious underpinnings, the debates over its theoretical assumptions and political commitments, and its formative vision of societal orde...
