After a long, frightening journey, a Seeker of Truth reaches the top of a mountain and finds the cave of the Wise One. He says, O, Wise One, I have come many miles and suffered many hardships, to ask you one question. Ask, says the Wise One. What is the meaning of life?, says the pilgrim. The Wise One pauses, smiles slightly, and replies, You have come far and seem to me worthy, so I shall give you what you seek--the truth. The answer is in your question and this journey is your life. Go back down the mountain. When you arrive, you will know how much time you have wasted, and you will have no more time left. So, give me your watch. Why is life so mysterious and why is its purpose so elusive ...
Strategic Interventions for People in Crisis, Trauma, and Disaster enables therapists to walk into difficult situations with a thorough understanding of interactional dynamics and a plan of action. With the stressful turbulence of our present culture, more and more clinicians are called upon to intervene in crisis situations. Violent interactions, once considered rare or beyond the province of the therapist, have become familiar events to many practitioners. This volume provides them with both the theoretical background and practical techniques to help people learn from crisis experiences and move toward change and growth. Of special interest are practical guidelines and specific interventio...
In this book, Kernberg first distinguishes, then interrelates psychoanalytic, clinical psychiatric, and neurobiological perspectives in a variety of areas, beginning with severe personality disorders and extending to love, destructiveness, mourning, spirituality, and the future of psychoanalytic inquiry. Dr. Kernberg is renowned for his work with borderline and narcissistic patients, and in this book, he offers new approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of the most severe personality disorders, particularly the spectrum of severe narcissistic psychopathology. His effort to relate psychoanalytic to neurobiological findings continues in two fascinating areas -- the study of sexual love and of religious experience -- and he examines object relations theory in relation to these two phenomena. Kernberg's analysis of love and aggression is both bold and nuanced and will captivate the professional psychotherapist as well as the psychologically astute general reader.
THE ART OF THERAPY Offers a practical approach to the therapist’s task, from the perspective of a 35-year veteran of private practice. This book debunks some of the most traditional rituals and hidebound conventions of the consulting-room, for example the myth of confidentiality, the master-slave relationship of therapist to client, and the tendency of therapy to continue until the client runs out of money to pay for it. New techniques and intervention strategies are presented, drawn from the Mental Research Institute’s international view of problem causation and solution-oriented methods of change. Psychotherapy is an art. Good therapy is good art. Great therapy is everlasting art, like the Mona Lisa.
This book includes the work of 22 contributing writers in addition to the three primary authors, John F. Clarkin, Ph.D., Peter Fonagy, Ph.D., and Glen O. Gabbard, M.D. Each contributor has extensive clinical experience, and some also have research experience, with the assessment and treatment of specific personality disorders.
This book is about understanding and managing patients with severe personality disorders. It covers biological, psychoanalytic and cognitive behavioral approaches and provides a pragmatic guide to best practice. As well as discussing issues of severity, treatability and the range of appropriate management options, the content explores the common elements of effective interventions and covers early prediction, countertransference, disruptions of the therapeutic alliance, suicidal crises and what to do when dealing with dangerous, refractory and stalking patients. The chapters are authored by an international cast of distinguished investigators and innovators from the field. This is a holistic, practical guide to the treatment of patients with a range of these disorders and it should be read by members of the mental health team dealing with this challenging clinical group.

Emergency psychiatry has established itself as an important part of mental health care, with a well organized network of services. More than 350 delegates from 35 countries attended the Second International Congress on Emergency Psychiatry in Amsterdam, with a large portion of the delegates representing the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and the African continent. About 110 speakers presented a wide variety of subjects, ranging from medical to psychological aspects, from interventions to organizational dilemmas, and from hypothetical new concepts to well documented reports on research projects. A selection of the papers presented are covered in this proceedings, as it was impossible to include all papers because of the sheer volume. Some papers were chosen on the basis of their actuality, others to give a good overview of the diversity of subjects covered at the congress, and still others because they deal with new/interesting points of view on special topics.
