The flora of the Mediterranean islands includes many rare and localized species unique to the islands. Some of these are particularly threatened with extinction due to various pressures caused by people and their activities in Mediterranean ecosystems. It includes 50 descriptive sheets of species which are especially threatened, based on the IUCN Red List criteria. Each sheet gives a description of the species with illustrations and maps, emphasizing the threats to the species, existing conservation measures and additional measures needed for their conservation. Aimed at the layman, the text is easily accessible to the non-botanist.
The Council of Europe landscape convention was adopted in Florence (Italy) on 20 October 2000 with the aim of promoting the protection, management and planning of European landscape and organising European co-operation in this area. It is the first international treaty covering all aspects of European landscape. It applies to the entire territory of the contracting parties and covers natural, rural, urban and peri-urban areas. It concerns landscapes that might be considered outstanding, commonplace or deteriorated. By taking into account landscape, culture and nature, the Council of Europe seeks to protect the quality of life and well-being of Europeans in a sustainable development perspective.

This book represents the most comprehensive compilation of data on threatened vascular plants ever published. It includes the names of some 33,000 plant species determined to be rare or threatened on a global scale. Conservation assessments were provided by the IUCN Species Survival Commission, the National Botanical Institute (South Africa), Environment Australia, and CSIRO, The Nature Conservancy, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, together with hundreds of botanic gardens and botanists throughout the world. The Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh and the New York Botanical Garden have made major in-kind contributions.The result of 20 years work by botanists and conservationists around the world, it is intended as a conservation tool, a provider of baseline information to measure conservation progress and as a primary source of data on plant species. Most importantly, however, it provides the building blocks on which to base a worldwide effort to conserve plant species.
Adoptée à Florence (Italie) le 20 octobre 2000, la convention du Conseil de l'Europe sur le paysage a pour objet de promouvoir la protection, la gestion et l'aménagement des paysages européens, et d'organiser la coopération européenne dans ce domaine. Elle est le premier traité international englobant le paysage européen sous tous ses aspects. Elle s'applique à tout le territoire des Parties contractantes et porte sur les espaces naturels, ruraux, urbains et périurbains. Elle concerne donc de la même façon les paysages pouvant être considérés comme remarquables, ordinaires ou dégradés. La convention représente une importante contribution à la mise en œuvre des objectifs du Conseil de l'Europe, qui sont de promouvoir la démocratie, les droits de l'homme et la prééminence du droit, ainsi que de trouver des solutions communes aux grands problèmes sociétaux de l'Europe. En prenant en compte les richesses paysagères, naturelles et culturelles, le Conseil de l'Europe cherche à préserver la qualité de vie et le bien-être des Européens dans une perspective de développement durable.
