Transgressive Tales

The stories in the Grimm brothers' Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children's and Household Tales), first published in 1812 and 1815, have come to define academic and popular understandings of the fairy tale genre. Yet over a period of forty years, the brothers, especially Wilhelm, revised, edited, sanitized, and bowdlerized the tales, publishing the seventh and final edition in 1857 with many of the sexual implications removed. However, the contributors in Transgressive Tales: Queering the Grimms demonstrate that the Grimms and other collectors paid less attention to ridding the tales of non-heterosexual implications and that, in fact, the Grimms' tales are rich with queer possibilities. Art, Excess, and Education

This book concentrates on the deep historical, political, and institutional relationships between art, education, and excess. Going beyond field specific discourses of art history, art criticism, philosophy, and aesthetics, it explores how the concept of excess has been important and enduring from antiquity through contemporary art, and from early film through the newer interactive media. Examples considered throughout the book focus on disgust, grandiosity, sex, violence, horror, disfigurement, endurance, shock, abundance, and emptiness, and frames them all within an educational context. Together they provide theories and classificatory systems, historical and political interpretations of art and excess, examples of popular culture, and suggestions for the future of educational practice.

Artist-curators Bettina Hutschek and Raphael Vella take readers on a poetic journey through the volatile territories of national and cultural identity?territories whose maps require a perpetual redrawing of borders, imaginaries, and conceptual frameworks. With its colonial past, unique geographic bearings, and hybrid linguistic and cultural traits, the Mediterranean island of Malta provides them with the ideal location to begin such a journey. In spite of the smallness of the island, Homo Melitensis?Maltese man?is hardly an endangered species, and the book?s abecedary presents ample proof of the rich, complex, and continuing history of a people that proudly extends to diasporic communities far beyond their land of origin. The book?s diverse outlook on the subject, characterized by its engagement of authors, artists, and travelogues from within and outside this Mediterranean archipelago, also brings to the fore the mythmaking and occasionally divisive, even violent nature of affiliations and loyalties. Exhibition: Malta Pavilion, Venice Biennale, Italy (13.05. - 26.11.2017).

World Film Locations: Malta

Malta has served as a beautiful backdrop for films for nearly as long as there has been a film industry. This entry in the World Film Locations series traces the history of Malta on screen, from bigbudget blockbusters to modest indie pictures. The locations Malta offers range widely, from grand fortified harbours and stunning cliffs to quaint villages and Baroque palaces. That diversity has enabled the island to double for countless locations, including ancient Troy and Alexandria, as well as Greece, Israel, and other Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions, while its well-known water tanks have proved to be perfect for shooting ocean scenes. Packed with illustrations, World Film Locations: Malta examines a number of films made in Malta, and will be a must-read for tourists, film buffs and scholars alike.
