The subject of this book is the hierarchies of integrable equations connected with the one-component and multi component loop groups. There are many publications on this subject, and it is rather well defined. Thus, the author would like t.o explain why he has taken the risk of revisiting the subject. The Sato Grassmannian approach, and other approaches standard in this context, reveal deep mathematical structures in the base of the integrable hi erarchies. This book explores the deep and fascinating connections that exist between a ubiquitous class of physically important waves known as solitons and the theory of transformations of a privileged class of surfaces as they were studied by eminent geometers of the nineteenth century. Thus, nonlinear equations governing soliton propagation and also mathematical descriptions of their remarkable interaction properties are shown to arise naturally out of the classical differential geometry of surfaces and what are termed Bäcklund-Darboux transformations.This text, the first of its kind, is written in a straightforward manner and is punctuated by exercises to test the understanding of the reader. It is suitable for use in higher undergraduate or graduate level courses directed at applied mathematicians or mathematical physics.
Nonlinear Evolution Equations and Dynamical Systems (NEEDS) provides a presentation of the state of the art. Except for a few review papers, the 40 contributions are intentially brief to give only the gist of the methods, proofs, etc. including references to the relevant litera- ture. This gives a handy overview of current research activities. Hence, the book should be equally useful to the senior resercher as well as the colleague just entering the field. Keypoints treated are: i) integrable systems in multidimensions and associated phenomenology ("dromions"); ii) criteria and tests of integrability (e.g., Painlev test); iii) new developments related to the scattering transform; iv) algebraic approaches to integrable systems and Hamiltonian theory (e.g., connections with Young-Baxter equations and Kac-Moody algebras); v) new developments in mappings and cellular automata, vi) applications to general relativity, condensed matter physics, and oceanography.

The Workshop NEEDS '91 brought together, from all over the world, scientists engaged in research on nonlinear systems, either their underlying mathematical properties or their physical applications. Accordingly, many talks were devoted to present methods of solution (like spectral transform) and to the investigation of structural (geometrical and/or algebraic) properties of (continuous and discrete) nonlinear evolution equations. Peculiar nonlinear systems, such as cellular automata, were also discussed. Applications to various fields of physics, namely, quantum field theory, fluid dynamics, general relativity and plasma physics were considered.

The second workshop on “Symmetry and Perturbation Theory” served as a forum for discussing the relations between symmetry and perturbation theory, and this put in contact rather different communities. This book provides a historical account of the discovery in 1834 of a remarkable singular wave that was ultimately to lead to the development of modern soliton theory with its diverse physical applications. In terms of associated geometry, the classical work of Bäcklund and Bianchi and its consequences is recounted, notably with regard to nonlinear superposition principles, which later were shown to be generic to soliton systems and which provide the analytic description of complex multi-soliton interaction. Whereas the applications of modern soliton in certain areas of physics are well-documented, deep connections between soliton theory and nonlinear continuum mechanics have had a separate development. This book describes wide applications in such disparate areas as elastostatics, elastodynamics, superelasticity, shell theory, magnetohydrostatics and magnetohydrodynamics, and will appeal to research scientists and advanced students with an interest in integrable systems in nonlinear physics or continuum mechanics.
