Me Darlin' Dublin's Dead and Gone

Bill Kelly survived a tough childhood in Dublin to become one of Ireland’s foremost journalists, perhaps best known for his Sunday Press soccer column as ‘Big Bill’ which was so popular it ran for thirty years. Here, with the sure touch of a born storyteller, he takes us back to his tenement boyhood in a time when ‘discos, television, even the wireless were in the realm of science fiction’ and water wings were made from two paraffin-oil tins and a piece of twine. Then he leads us onward through his extraordinary and varied life – his Catholic schooling where the nuns left him ‘in no doubt that hell was a terribly real place and damn few escaped it’ – his debut boxing event as a pro under an assumed name ‘for a fiver for three rounds’ – his introduction to journalism in the newsroom of Radio Éireann in 1946 – his brief career in PR when he represented the great boxer Jack Doyle – how he ‘rescued Kippure’ with the Irish Parachute Club – his boozing sessions with Brendan Behan and so much more. Big Bill’s love of his native city shines through every word but it is his own exuberant and humorous take on life that makes this such a memorable read.

Ever since Chester Witherspoon was a child, he had been picked on by older, larger boys. One day he got hold of his fathers revolver and, in an attempt to even the odds, shot at the town bully. He missed, but that single action earned him a reputation that would serve as the basis of The Terrorist. He would learn at an early age that killing was not only exhilarating, but infectious. It wasnt long before he had every lawman on the West Coat searching for him. To add insult to injury, he managed to get on the mobs hit list as well. And they knew where he lived!

A serial killer is terrorizing New York City in Angel of Death which can best be described as NYPD Blue meets Hannibal Lector. Detective Bill Kelly is in charge of this good-news, bad-news case. The bad news is that the killer is slashing his victim’s throats and decorating their mutilated bodies with the Colombian necktie, where the tongues of the victims are shoved down their gullets and pushed through the gaping hole in their throats. The good news is that the victims have all been drug dealers, and John Q. Public is in absolutely no danger of becoming the killer’s next victim. Detective Kelly’s daughter is a drug addict, and he’s torn between doing his job as a New York City cop, and the realization that dead drug dealers might not be such a bad thing after all.
