Broadway actress Billie Burke was one of the most sought after young stage beauties of her time, stealing the hearts of Enrico Caruso, Mark Twain, and, most importantly, famed Broadway producer Florenz Ziegfeld, who became her husband. Following Ziegfeld's death, the threats of financial ruin and encroaching age forced Burke to recreate herself as a Hollywood character actress. This biography benefits from the cooperation of the daughter and grandchildren of Burke and Ziegfeld, as well as from anecdotes provided by actors who performed with Burke on the stage and screen. In addition to studying the character and significance of Burke's greatest screen role as Glinda the Good Witch of the North, this richly illustrated book also provides a complete history of Burke's stage, screen, and radio work.

Born in the mid-nineteenth century, Sophie Lyons was a master thief, con artist, blackmailer and smuggler. Much of her success as a criminal was due to the fact that she was fearless, reckless, sharp and cunning--everything a woman of her time was not supposed to be. As a young child, Sophie's parents forced her to steal when she showed a talent for pickpocketing. Strong-willed and smart, she blossomed into a beautiful teenager who caught the eye of many men in the underworld of New York City. By the time Sophie reached her late teens she was married to her second husband--a notorious bank burglar named Ned Lyons--and was a professional criminal in her own right. Despite her prominent place in crime history, Sophie Lyons has never been the subject of a full-length biography. This book chronicles Sophie's fascinating and tragic life, from her beginnings as a criminal prodigy, through her ingenious escape from Sing Sing prison and her lifelong struggle with mental illness.

With Powder on My Nose

Following on from her successful 1949 memoir “With a Feather on My Nose,” here we have a further biography, first published in 1959, from famous Broadway and early silent film actress Billie Burke, best known as Glinda the Good Witch of the North in The Wizard of Oz and widow of Broadway producer Florenz Ziegfeld of Ziegfeld Follies fame. Co-author Cameron Shipp, a ghost writer who had also worked with Mack Sennett and Lionel Barrymore, assisted in assembling Miss Burke’s copious notes and transcribed her enthusiastic monologues into this wonderful biography filled with good-humoured advice on marriage, career, exercise, food (included are some delicious recipes!), and even perfecting the art of lying about your age! A most enjoyable trip down a career film star’s memory lane.
