'Robert Mason tells a gripping account of the relentless courage and heroism amidst the insanity of the Vietnam war. The final few pages are the most shocking I have read in any book.' - Tim Peake A stunning book about the right stuff in the wrong war. As a child, Robert Mason dreamed of levitating. As a young man, he dreamed of flying helicopters - and the U.S. Army gave him his chance. They sent him to Vietnam where, between August 1965 and July 1966, he flew more than 1,000 assault missions. In Chickenhawk, Robert Mason gives us a devastating bird's eye-view of that war in all its horror. He experiences the accelerating terror, the increasingly desperate courage of a man 'acting out the r...

Trails of Yesterday

Trails of Yesterday, first published in 1921, is ranked with the best firsthand accounts of ranching on the northern Great Plains in the 1870s and 1880s. This classic of cow-country literature is rich in authentic frontier history. Born in England in 1842, John Bratt came to America when he was twenty-two, and in 1866 he joined a wagon train traveling from Nebraska City to Fort Phil Kearny. Bratt gives a vivid view of the country along the Great Platte River Road, reporting on the condition of the trail, meetings with Indians such as Dull Knife, and encounters with buffalo herds. There are splendid descriptions of the few forts then protecting the long trail—Forts Kearny, McPherson, Mitchell, and Sedgwick—and of the road ranches of John Burke and the notorious Jack Morrow, among others. Bratt was a cattle rancher for more than two decades and was instrumental in the settlement of North Platte, Nebraska.

A High-Rise to Hell

These short stories are written to acknowledge the challenges faced by a minority group in American Society who remain in search of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Though they have become marginalized and exploited by the dominant population, they strive for respect, equal rights, equal opportunities, and equal accesses. Their persistence is strengthened in spite of, or because of the ongoing deceptive practices and hollow promises with which they must contend. I only hope that you will become inspired to support their efforts.

That Old Ace in the Hole

From Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner Annie Proulx comes an exhilarating story brimming with language, history, landscape, music, and love. Bob Dollar is a young man from Denver trying to make good in a bad world. Out of college and aimless, Dollar takes a job with Global Pork Rind, scouting out big spreads of land that can be converted to hog farms. Soon he's holed up in a two-bit Texas town called Woolybucket, where he settles into LaVon Fronk's old bunkhouse for fifty dollars a month, helps out at Cy Frease's Old Dog Café, and learns the hard way how vigorously the old Texas ranch owners will hold on to their land, even when their children want no part of it. Robust, often bawdy, strikingly original, That Old Ace in the Hole traces the waves of change that have shaped the American West over the past century—and in Bob Dollar, Proulx has created one of the most irrepressible characters in contemporary fiction.

BUNYIP: A mythical creature from Australia’s ancient history. It is believed by some that the blood and flesh from the BUNYIP can miraculously speed the healing process. On a remote cattle station in the Simpson Desert a cattleman kills an unidentified creature that is slaughtering his cattle. Within hours the story that a BUNYIP has been shot goes viral world-wide. For political reasons the story is given credibility by the Australian Government to divert attention from a potentially world-shattering news announcement. Powerful political lobbies and criminal forces relentlessly pursue the truth behind the BUNYIP legend. Challenging the issue of state-sponsored assassination, some possessions may be too big to be owned by a single person. BUNYIP questions whether myth can ever be suppressed or destroyed, when sometimes reality can be tenuous and fragile. BUNYIP is written in ‘SCROVEL,’ and amalgamation of a screenplay and a novel. All introspective text is removed, and the story is told in what can be seen and heard. The reader experiences the story as a virtual movie.

Old Home Town

In Old Home Town, Rose Wilder Lane has recreated small-town society of pre-World War I America with a precise feeling for decorum, dress, and kitchen dialogue. Like Sherwood Anderson in Winesburg, Ohio, she describes a community through the stories of certain memorable citizens. The overlay of nostalgia cannot hide some sharp observations about marriage and women's rights.

While sitting in the hallway outside of his first grade classroom, young Bobby Dorsey overhears his teacher reporting his misbehavior to his mother, Margaret, through a vent in the classroom door. He is shocked when he hears his mother tearfully confess that he is the unexpected result of a high school affair, that she never intended to have a child, and that he would have been aborted if not for the intervention of his grandmother, a devout Southern Baptist, and her pastor. The unexpected and unwanted birth of Bobby causes Margaret to feel she was robbed of the fun of her high school years. Driven to complete her lost adolescence, she exposes Bobby to a string of boyfriends, with whom she o...
